GULF SHORES, Ala. - You're not going to beat many teams if you don't get runners on base, and Campbellsville was one-hit by Shorter's Kristen Little Sunday afternoon, losing 2-0 on Day 3 of the Gulf Coast Classic. Then No. 16 William Carey ended CU's stay in the Gold bracket with an 8-4 win.
The loss gave the Lady Tigers a 4-5 Alabama swing (2-1 in Mobile and 2-4 in Gulf Shores). Shorter came into the game ranked ninth with an 18-3 win/loss slate.
Shorter 2, Campbellsville 0
Kacie Vincent managed the only hit for CU, a two-out single in the third.
Brooke Boils, who had one of four CU walks, was tagged out on the play and erased an early opportunity to score.
Campbellsville (13-9) had two runners on in the fifth after
Courtney Turpin and
Nicole Bohanon were walked with one out. But Boils struck out swinging and
Emma Napier flied out to right. Campbellsville had two runners on in the sixth as well.
Kristin Benton was hit by a pitch and was out on a fielder's choice by
Bailey Dillender. Dillender and was joined on the bags by
Jennifer England, who reached on an error.
Turpin, who allowed only four hits got in trouble in the sixth when Emily Clements led off with a single. An out later, Maddie Bray sent a two-run homer to left.
William Carey 8, Campbellsville 4
When Campbellsville played William Carey on the first night of the Gulf Shores Classic it ended up as a 1-0 loss. On Sunday, Carey beat the Lady Tigers 8-4.
William Carey scored five runs in the first inning off starting pitcher
Martina Riney. Riney went 2 2/3, allowing five hits. But the damage had already been done.
CU crawled to within 5-4 by the bottom of the fourth, but Carey responded with three runs off
Taylor Wroe in the top of the fifth.
Kristin Benton's double plated
Kacie Vincent in the first. In the second inning,
Brooke Boils singled in
Heather Oakley and
Alyssa Barker. Campbellsville's last run came in the bottom of the fourth when Barker scored on a error.

Nicole Bohanon each had singles for the Lady Tigers.
Campbellsville will get back into Mid-South Conference play when it hosts Georgetown in a Tuesday double-header at Veterans Memorial Park, starting at 2:00.
