ST. CATHARINE, Ky. - It's a good thing that a softball score book isn't an artist's canvas. If it was then the Lady Tigers would have painted a pretty ugly picture Tuesday afternoon while escaping St. Catharine, 6-4, 10-9.
The two wins keep Campbellsville (22-12, 6-1) tied in the conference loss column with Lindsey Wilson and Shawnee State, teams they meet later this week. The Lady Tigers are receiving votes (11) in the latest NAIA Top 25.
The difference-maker for CU was that SCC's five homers in the twin bill were all solo shots, while the Lady Tigers plated nine runs with four homers.
Campbellsville 6, St. Catharine 4Trailing 2-1 in game 1, the Lady Tigers erupted for a five-run sixth punctuated by a couple of two-run homers by
Alyssa Barker and
Emma Napier, respectively.
Courtney Turpin registered the win with a seven hitter, giving up solo runs in the fourth through seventh frames. St. Catharine (9-21, 0-12) stranded four.
CU got on the board in the top of the first when Napier led off with a single, was sacrificed to second by
Jordan Cornett and scored on a passed ball.
SCC's Carrie Wilkerson plated Hagan Goldey in the fourth. Goldey reached when Turpin nicked her with a pitch. The Lady Patriots went ahead the next inning when Brandi Hood homered.
Wilkerson plated her second run of the game with single in the sixth and Hood's seventh-inning homer closed out the scoring.
Campbellsville had 11 hits, led by Napier's three. Turpin had a single and a double. Cornett,
Kacie Vincent,
Heather Oakley,
Kristin Benton and
Jennifer England all reached safely.
Campbellsville 10, St. Catharine 9Campbellsville seemingly had the second game under control, leading 10-5 going into the bottom of the sixth.
Taylor Wroe was touched up for the five runs and Coach
Shannon Wathen went to
Martina Riney after Wroe served up back-to-back homers to Taylor Steff and Chelcie Rein in the fifth. A big play in that inning was CU catching Carrie Wilkerson napping at first after she had singled. Otherwise SCC would have had an additional run on Steff's four-bagger.
CU's pitching staff was leaking oil in the sixth and its defense was making mental mistakes when St. Catharine posted a four spot to pull within one run.
With one out in the bottom of the sixth, an infield error gave the Lady Patriots an extra out ... one they put to good use. Goldey doubled with Laura Mattingly aboard and a single by Wilkerson scored SCC's sixth run. Riney walked Steff and Hood's single made the score 10-7. Riney had a two-strike count on Rein when the junior from Louisville plated two runs with a base hit.
Turpin came in in relief and struck out Amber Matteoli. Turpin gave up a two-out walk to Kasie Prather in the seventh, followed by a Goldey single. But, Wilkerson grounded to third for the games last out.
Campbellsville had 11 hits. Benton had three singles and England had a three-run homer and a single. Oakley,
Sara Paragon, Vincent and Napier had singles.
Bailey Dillender had a two-run first-inning home run.
Campbellsville will host No. 14 Lindsey Wilson Thursday in an MSC doubleheader, first game at 2:00.
