GULF SHORES, Ala. - Rain delayed the start of Campbellsville's softball games on the first day of the Gulf Coast Classic, and the Lady Tigers were only able to gain a split - beating Notre Dame 6-2 and losing a 1-0 heart-breaker to 16th-ranked William Carey.
Campbellsville 6, Notre Dame 2Kristin Benton had three doubles and two RBI as CU went to 12-6 on the season, manufacturing six runs in a 10-hit attack.
Notre Dame (3-10) scored a run in the third without getting a ball out of the infield. A hit and two CU errors accounted for the Blue Falcons' 1-0 lead.
But the Lady Tigers responded with the three-spot in the bottom of the frame. Benton's double scored
Emma Napier, who reached when she was hit by a pitch.
Bailey Dillender was safe on a fielder's choice and was plated by
Jennifer England's single.
Heather Oakley's squeeze bunt scored England.
That was all the run support that
Taylor Wroe would need. Even though Wroe allowed at least one base runner in each inning, she pitched her way out of jams while allowing 10 hits, no walks and striking out four. The win puts Wroe at 6-0 on the season.
The Lady Tigers got insurance runs in the fifth and sixth. In the fifth, a two-out double by
Alyssa Barker scored England. In the sixth, a double by Napier scored
Jordan Cornett, who had hit safely. Then Benton's third double of the game plated CU's final run.
Kacie Vincent also had a single in the game.
Wroe got in some trouble in the top of the seventh by allowing three singles. One run scored, but one of Wroe's four Ks produced the second out and a fly out to Benton in left ended the game.
William Carey 1, Campbellsville 0The Lady Tigers (12-7) were one-hit by William Carey's Alyssa Boutwell and suffered a 1-0 defeat when the Lady Crusaders scored a run in the bottom of the seventh on a throwing error with runners on first and third. Boutwell struck out eight CU batters.
Courtney Turpin (5-5) was the hard-luck loser. The sophomore from Lawrenceburg, Ky. allowed only four hits, but two of them came in the seventh inning.
Campbellsville had
Erin Benton on third in the the third inning after she walked and was advanced by
Jordan Cornett's sacrifice bunt and a ground-out by
Emma Napier.
Heather Oakley was stranded at first in the seventh after she reached base with two outs on a dropped fly ball.
Campbellsville moves to Day 2 of the Gulf Coast Classic with games on Saturday against Faulkner and 6th-ranked Belhaven.
