DANVILLE, Ky. -
Brooke Boils' grand slam homer in the bottom of the eighth propelled Campbellsville past Pikeville, 7-3, and into Friday play of the Mid-South Conference Tournament at Millennium Park.
Boils' heroics came with the Lady Tigers trailing Pikeville 3-2 after Hannah Vincent led off the top of the eighth with a home run to center.
Kristin Benton led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and was advanced into scoring position by
Bailey Dillender's sacrifice bunt.
Heather Oakley's single plated Benton and then successive singles by
Jennifer England and
Sara Paragon loaded the sacks for Boils.
"Maybe this will set a fire under us," deadpanned Coach
Shannon Wathen, whose team had lost seven of its last eight.
Pikeville went up 2-0 in the first and held a 2-1 lead all the way to the bottom of the fifth when Paragon parked one to knot the score.
Taylor Wroe, who was the loser against Rio Grande in the morning game, relieved
Courtney Turpin with one out in the fourth, and benefitted from the eighth-inning rally. Wroe (16-5) gave up three hits and struck out six. Turpin gave up a like number of hits and fanned three.
Campbellsville improves to 34-21 and Pikeville finished its season at 25-18.
Emma Napier, Dillender, England, Paragon and Boils all had two-hit games in the Ladt Tigers' 13-hit attack. Oakley and Benton reached safety once and
Jordan Cornett had a two-out double in the third.
Campbellsville will play Uva.-Wise, a 5-2 loser to St. Catharine College, at 11 Friday morning.
