TROUTVILLE, Va. - Campbellsville's softball season came to and end Saturday afternoon in the final of the NCCAA Tournament, the Lady Tigers falling to California Baptist 9-1.
CU (41-24) led for half an inning after loading the base in the first, but was only able to push across one run.
Heather Oakley singled home
Jordan Cornett for the Lady Tigers' only score.
Cal's Emma Holden, the NCCAA Pitcher of the Year at 24-4, snuffed out about every attempt by Campbellsville. She had inning-ending strikeouts in the first and the third frames, leaving five runners stranded.
After Cal went up 2-1 in its half of the first,
Courtney Turpin did a good job by allowing only one hit. That is, until the fourth when the flood gates opened.
Tina Galinato and April Vasquez opened the inning with singles. A ground out by Andie Banuelos scored the first run of the four-run fourth. Turpin then walked Marshean August and gave up a two-run single to Lindsay Henry.
Cal (49-6) scored three more times in the fifth to reach the run-rule limit of eight, ending the game.
CU had five hits, three more than it did against Holden when they met on Friday.
Jordan Cornett led the offense with two singles.
Kristin Benton, Oakley and Dillender had one hit apiece.
Turpin, Cornett and Dillender were named to the NCCAA All-Tournament Team and Benton was named an NCCAA All American. Previously,
Emma Napier, Benton and Oakley were named to the NCCAA All-Region Team.
The 41-24 record was the third 40-plus win season for Coach
Shannon Wathen in her 10-year career.
