COLUMBIA, Ky. — Campbellsville ended a three-year drought on Sunday and slipped by Lindsey Wilson 11-10 to bring home the 2012 President's Cup played over the weekend at The Pines, Lindsey's home golf course.
Lindsey would have won by 10 strokes if medal scores counted, but the President's Cup is based on a Ryder Cup format with points awarded for team matches on Saturday and 14 individual matches on Sunday. The Tigers led after Saturday's matches 4-3.
"The team battled all day long," said CU Coach Kenny Lawson. I am so proud of them. I tell you what, we have a heckuva team.
"This year's team works hard and has the ability to win every tournament in which we play."
Jacob Sims was two up going to 17 in the Cup's deciding match. He three-putted 17 and needed to tie or win the 18th for the Tigers to secure the cup. He parred as did his opponent, Zach Madewell, and the cup returned to Campbellsville with his 1-up win.
In all, Campbellsville won six matches, lost five and tied two.
Lawson had plenty of reason to smile as some of his freshmen turned in respectable performances in their first collegiate event.
Seniors Trey Shirley, Edmonton, Ky. (74-66, 140) and Scott Foster, Cincinnati (71-70, 141) posted CU's lowest medal scores at two- and one-under par, respectively. Brandon Collier, Lexington, Ky., shot 145, 75-70 and freshman Cody Goodwin, Portland, Tenn., 149, 74-75 to hold down the other two spots in medal scoring for Campbellsville.
