CU volleyball initiates new players with season opening win

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – A lot of new faces in the lineup became familiar favorites before the night was over Tuesday, as the Campbellsville University Lady Tigers opened the 2012 volleyball season with a 3-1 win over Indiana University Southeast. CU drew one of its largest crowds in recent history for a home opener in Powell Athletic Center as the Lady Tigers took down the Grenadiers, 25-16, 23-25, 25-15 and 25-19.

"We are happy with the girls' effort tonight since it was our first game and having so many new faces," said Amy Eckenfels, CU head coach. "We are a very deep team with a lot of possibilities. I'm looking forward to more match play."

After cruising to a first set win, IUS and CU battled to a gridlock in the second set, with multiple ties and lead changes. P.J. Cockrell collected a kill to break an 18-18 tie and give Indiana Southeast the lead for good. Rinata Aisena, Tara Robertson and Haley Bechtel rallied with kills to pull CU within a point, 24-23, but IUS held on to win the set.

The second set was as close as it got, as the Lady Tigers built on a 15-10 lead in the third set. A diving pancake dig by Giselle Hernandez led to a kill by Daiane Souza and block from Robertson to boost CU's lead en route to the win.

Leading two sets to one, junior middle blocker Kelly Moyer came alive, hammering down kill after kill for an early 8-2 lead in the decisive set. She went on to lead all players with 12 kills – her highest mark since October 2010. While IUS managed to force a 13-13 tie, the Lady Tigers burst out of a timeout. Souza's kills led to four of CU's final six points to seal the win. The Sao Paulo, Brazil native finished the night with 11 kills in only two sets played.

Freshman setter Kira Stewart of Ballwin, Mo., took control of her new role with 29 assists and one ace on the night. She also had four kills. Bechtel and Aisena had six kills each, while Robertson had four. Defensively, CU was led by libero Caitlin Dresing's 20 digs, but Stewart and Bechtel were close behind with 15 and 14, respectively. Audrey Sanders was just off the double-digit mark with nine and Moyer had eight. Sanders led all players with two service aces.

IUS was led in attack by Coral MayBriar's eight kills, followed by six each from Lindsey Maymon and Kristyn Maymon.

Campbellsville (1-0) will return to Powell Athletic Center on Thursday to host Brescia University for a match at 7 p.m. EDT.
