ST. CATHARINE, Ky. — In a match fraught with poor serves, awkward assists, sometimes horrible hitting and missed kill opportunities ... Campbellsville University seemed to maybe have had fewer and slipped by St. Catharine 3-1 (25-15, 23-25, 26-24 and 25-18) Tuesday night.
The win moves CU to 6-4 (2-1) and handed the Lady Patriots their third loss in a row and a 4-11 (0-3) worksheet.
The Lady Tigers book-ended the four-set victory with 23-15 and 25-18 wins in sets one and four. But what happened in the middle made the match, well, a match.
In set two, after Audrey Sanders served three consecutive aces for a 9-7 lead CU seemed to contract heavy feet. SCC broke away from a 22-all tie and won three of the next four points to even the match at 1-1. The second set saw 10 ties.
In set three, St. Catharine never trailed until 24-23 when CU got kills from Rinata Aisena and Daiane Souza to tie the set for the fifth tine. A tip kill gave the Lady Tigers a 24-23 lead. SCC tied it again at 24-all before Kelly Moyer collected a kill and then CU benefitted from a St. Catharine error.
In set four, Campbellsville led all the way ... building leads of 10-5, 16-10 and 22-15 before closing it out at 25-18. In much the same fashion CU busted open leads of 10-4 and 16-7 before ending with a 4-0 run and a 25-15 win in set one.
Aisena led the team in kills with 17 followed by 12 each from Souza and Haley Bechtel. Moyer had 11 and Laura DeGear eight.
Kira Stewart had 56 of the team's 57 assists. Four players had double-digit digs. Caitlin Dresing led the way with 14, Stewart and Sanders 12 each and Bechtel 10.
Campbellsville goes on the road this weekend to Lebanon, Tenn. and the Cumberland University Volleyball Classic. The Lady Tigers play Webber International at 1:00 Friday and turn around and play Martin Methodist at 5:00. They have two more matches on Saturday.
