CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Trey Shirley entered the day even with Lindsey Wilson's Nathan Clark, but shot -5 on the back nine to run away with a five-stroke victory in the Mid-South Conference Fall Tournament and repeat as medalist of the Don Bishop Invitational at Campbellsville Country Club on Tuesday.
Shirley and Clark each shot 70 to open the tournament Monday. However, Clark quickly found separation with an eagle on No. 1. His two stroke lead remained through the front nine and increased to three with a bogey by Shirley on 10. But Shirley bounced back with a birdie, eagle, par, birdie and birdie to take the lead over Clark on the 15th green. He then finished the tournament strong with a birdie on 18 to tie his career low-round of 65 and beat last fall's Don Bishop low round by one stroke.
Campbellsville finished fourth as a team, despite Shirley's nine-under par score of 135. Scott Foster was second for the Tigers by shooting an even 72 on Tuesday and finished three-over for the tournament with a 147.
"Those guys really played strong and played their heart out. We're going to have to do some work and get some things fixed between those areas, but our team played really well on the second day," said Kenny Lawson, CU men's golf coach.
The other top scores for Campbellsville's team of five were Tanner Hall (80-74 – 154), Brandon Collier (76-82 – 158) and Cody Goodwin (78-80 – 158).
