Tigers blank Cumberland to end skid

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- Campbellsville University men's soccer snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-0 Mid-South Conference shutout over Cumberland University on Wednesday Finley Stadium and Citizens Bank Field.

 

 

With the win, the Tigers improve to a 5-3 overall record on the season and pull even in the MSC at 1-1.

Campbellsville's first goal came in the 10th minute when sophomore forward Gustav Carlsson hooked up with freshman Roraigh Yearwood for a 1-0 Campbellsville lead.

Yearwood added another goal in the 21st minute for a 2-0 halftime lead. Campbellsville finished the first half with 11 total shots on goal. Cumberland University entered the break with only four.

Upon resuming play, Campbellsville scored quickly, just three minutes into the half. The Tigers scored their third goal of the contest off the foot of senior captain John Kennedy. Carlsson played the ball into the box on a corner-kick, finding Kennedy in a sea of Cumberland uniforms for a 3-0 lead.

The last Tiger goal did not come until the 76th minute, when senior midfielder Pontus Yngve was spotted by freshman Chris Moyo. Moyo played the ball through a Cumberland defender, connecting with Yngve in mid-stride. Yngve fired the ball into the back of net for the 4-0 tally.

Goalkeeper Max Malachiyev had two saves for his third shut out of the season. Cumberland's keeper, Sully Shattuck, had eight.

CU will travel to Mayfield, Ky., to close the week with a game at Mid-Continent University on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 4 p.m.
