LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Campbellsville University women's golf claimed top prize in the second Transylvania University Fall Invitational Wednesday afternoon at the University Club of Kentucky.
The Lady Tigers shot a one-round score of 347 in the one-day tournament to beat out Sewanee University of the South (351), Transylvania (368), Asbury University (371) and Mount St. Joseph (374).
It is the first tournament win for first-year head coach Brent Vernon.
"Conditions were very tough today. The wind was swirling with 10-20 mile per hour winds, and the course was very wet from all the rain it had taken over the last 24 hours," Vernon said. "I was very proud of how resilent the girls were. They battled the conditions and came out with a victory ... It was a total team effort, and hopefully it will carry over throughout the rest of the semester."
Senior Katie White led the Lady Tigers with an 82 to finish third as an individual. Caitlyn Wilkerson shot 85 to tie for third, while Meleigha Pollock was sixth with an 86. McLane Farr rounded out the Top 4 for Campbellsville with a 94, which was good for a 13th-place tie. White and Wilkerson were named to the All-Tournament Team.
CU's No. 5 golfer was freshman Annie Schakat, who shot 109 in her first collegiate tournament.
Leslie Hastings shot 99 as an individual for CU. It is her lowest score since returning to competitive golf this fall for the first time since September 2009.
Sewanee's Emily Javadi shot 68 to lead all players, followed by Jenna King with a 77.
Campbellsville will return to action Oct. 1-2 in Rome, Ga., to compete in the Chick-fil-A Collegiate Invitational at Stonebridge Golf Club.
