PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — Shawnee State continued to be tough at home against the Lady Tigers as the 15th-ranked Lady Bears defeated Campbellsville, 91-77.
Shawnee jumped on Campbellsville early and poor free throw shooting and ball handling never let CU find its rhythm. The Lady Tigers shot just 12-27 from the free throw line in the game, 2-8 in the first half.
CU (12-3, 6-1) had cut a 15-point first-half deficit to four points, 30-26, with about five minutes to go before intermission, but a 3 by Allison Nagle and a Diane Abbady follow shot got Shawnee rolling again.
"You don't come in here a spot Shawnee State 17 points and expect to come back and win," said Coach Ginger Colvin. "We weren't ready. We knew what they did and it's so frustrating to have an opportunity to go 7-0 in the conference and then play like we did."
Trailing by 10 at the half, Campbellsville fiddled with the game for the first eight minutes of the second half and trailed by nine, 53-44. But Shawnee pushed that to a 23-point lead with an 18-4 run and they were never seriously threatened after that.
CU did rally a bit late, going from 88-64 down to 89-75 at the 1:09 mark, but that was against Shawnee's mop-up players.
"We played scared," said Colvin. "They are really athletic and so good, but we just came in here and laid an egg today.
"We've got to get better, find a rotation and some rebounders."
Courtney Clifton (17) was joined in double figures by Keisha Compton and Mary Jehlik with 11and 10 points, respectively. Shawnee had five players in double figures, two with double-doubles. Alex Pohl had 16 points and 11 boards, and Abbady had 12 points and 11 boards.
It doesn't get any easier for the Lady Tigers who return home Tuesday at 6:00 for an out-of-conference game against No. 21 Bethel University. The game can be heard on CU Radio 88.7, or by going to the link at www.campbellsvilletigers.com.
