Lady Tigers sweep Bluefield for third straight time

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville volleyball got back in the win column tonight as the Lady Tigers dominated the second and third sets after a sluggish start. Campbellsville outscored Bluefield College 50-22 in the last two sets. The Lady Tigers improved to 15-4 overall and 8-2 in the Mid-South Conference with their second sweep of the year (three counting last year's win) over the Lady Rams, 25-23, 25-10, 25-12.

The first set went back and fourth. While neither team could get any momentum or rhythm in their game. Campbellsville finished the first set with a season-high seven service errors and only one ace by Audrey Sanders.

The Lady Tigers were down 4-8 early in the first set but the seniors stepped up for Campbellsville and scored the next three points. Lexis Lloyd, Kelly Moyer and Giselle Hernandez kick-started the Lady Tigers and Campbellsville never trailed the rest of the match.

With the score 20-19 in favor of CU, Bluefield coach Jim Butski called his second timeout. Coming out of the timeout Moyer stepped up for CU with one of her nine kills and led Campbellsville to a first set win, 25-23.

The second set started out much like the first, but Campbellsville started to pull away after Bluefield inched closer, 5-4 in favor of CU.

After Campbellsville extended its lead to 14-7, Butski called another timeout to try and cool the hot hands of the Lady Tigers but was unsuccessful.

Bluefield beat themselves coming out of the timeout by having two attacki errors in a row. After another kill by Lexis Lloyd, Campbellsville then went on a 7-3 run to crush the thoughts and dreams that the Lady Rams might have had in coming back to pull off the upset.

Rinata Aisena led CU with four kills in the second frame, but Campbellsville used all of its offensive weapons to take over the match. Jana Kortas and Giselle Hernandez had three kills each while Daiane Souza and Jackie Schwieger also added two of their own.

Campbellsville went on a 20-6 run to finish the second set and took a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set was all Campbellsville. With the score at 8-5 in favor of CU, the Lady Tigers went on another big run (10-0) to put the set and match out of reach.

Kortas and Moyer each recorded six kills in the last set and gave Campbellsville the upper hand in that offensive category. Bluefield only recorded two kills in the final set and 10 on the night with Jasmine Morrow leading the way with five.

After the first two-game losing streaking on the year, the Lady Tigers needed this win to get them back on the prowl for the second half of the MSC season.

Campbellsville will host University of Pikeville on Saturday in Powell Athletic Center. Game time is set for 1 p.m. The last match between CU and UPike came back on Sept. 29 when Campbellsville swept the Lady Bears in straight sets.

After Saturday's match, CU will then go on a six-game road stint that starts with the Highway 55 rival and No. 11 team in the nation, Lindsey Wilson College. After the final road stretch of the season, Campbellsville will return home to face another top 25 opponent in No. 23 Georgetown College on Tuesday, Oct. 29.
