CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville University junior varsity baseball team got their first two wins on the year against St. Catherine College last night, 10-4 and 9-1. The JV Tigers trail 2-4 in the series going into the spring.
Justin Cox struggled in his first start of the year. The junior southpaw was hit hard by the Patriots and was pulled in the third inning. Cox surrendered four runs on five hits for St. Catherine and left with an 0-4 deficit.
Robert Knabel came in from the bullpen after Cox was pulled and was perfect for the remaining 3 2/3 innings. He quieted the Bat Pats and gave Campbellsville a chance to come from behind in the last half of the game.
CU ended the game with 10 runs off eight hits and St. Catherine only had four runs off five hits; which all came in the first two innings.
Game two was a much different story. Campbellsville starting pitcher, Eric Wykoff pitched 6 2/3 strong innings and former Patriot, Tyler Sweat came in for the last out to give the Tigers the 9-1 victory. Wykoff surrendered only four hits along with the lone SCC run.
Although the pitching was superb, you can't leave out the offensive performance from the JV Tigers. Campbellsville came away with nine runs off 11 hits and gave CU the 9-1 win.
The JV team will play host to Asbury University on Monday, Oct. 14. Game one of the double header is set for 6 p.m. The last meetings between the two teams were in the Pumpkin Classic hosted by Lindsey Wilson College. Campbellsville came away with a 7-1 win over the Eagles and CU leads the season series 2-1-1.
