PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. – Day 2 didn't only show improvement, but an all-time best round for Campbellsville University women's golf at the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Invitational.
Led by an even par 72 from freshman Cassidy Scantland, CU shot a 305 through 18 holes at the Hombre Golf Course, tying the known school record for low round. CU women's golf previously shot a 305 in the second round of the 2012 Mid-South Conference Spring Tournament.
The 305 was the fifth-best score of the round and seventh-best of the tournament. The Lady Tigers maintain their eighth-place standing after shooting 334 on Monday but move within two strokes of seventh-place North Greenville University with a two-day total of 639.
"We had a great day today. We played really well and held our composure and finished, which was good to see," said Brent Vernon, CU women's golf head coach. "We had four scores in the 70s, which was also very good to see. As a team, we didn't move up, but I'm not worried about that. I'm concerned with how we do, and we did well."
CU improved its score by 29 strokes, while two teams ahead of them saw a significant drop in score. Campbellsville is currently 11 strokes out of sixth place and 27 strokes out of fifth place.
Scantland had three bogeys on the day, but shot birdie on holes 4, 10 and 14 to finish even at 72. She now has a two-day total of 147 and is tied for third-place individually at 3-over par. She is only one stroke out of second place, while Lee University's Courtney Shelton shot 68 and 69 in the first two days to lead the tournament at 137, 7-under par.
"Cassidy has done well. Hopefully she can put together another good round as well as all of the girls and finish this tournament strong," Vernon said.
Anna Marie Hyatt shot 76, while Olivia Parrott shot 78, Ashley Goodin shot 79 and Grace Gupton shot 91 to round out CU's scores in the second round.
The three-day NCCAA Invitational will conclude Wednesday at the Hombre. Live scoring will be available at GolfStatResults.com.
