Volleyball stays on track with win at Shawnee

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio. – The Lady Tigers looked for their 11th Mid-South Conference win as they took on the Lady Bears of Shawnee State University. It seemed like a dream for Campbellsville as the match started out in SSU's favor. The Lady Bears came out and won the first set, but Campbellsville regained focus and swept the next three, winning 3-1 (19-25, 25-15, 25-18, 26-24).

Campbellsville struggled to find its groove in the first set as service and attack errors, while not making the SSU defense move, was the difference maker for the Lady Tigers.

"We got out-worked the first game," Coach Amy Zink said. "We came out sluggish and our hitting was not as aggressive as it needs to be."

The second set took a 180-degree turn as the Lady Tigers came out and out played Shawnee State from the get-go and CU evened the match with a 25-15 win. The serving from CU was much more aggressive and that is when the tables started to turn.

Tinley Park, Ill. native, Jackie Schwieger recorded a career high 51 assists, which was definitely one strong point for CU. Their passing was superb as Shawnee State struggled to find its grove after aggressive serving by Campbellsville.

"We capitalized on our serving and that led to bad passing and mistakes for Shawnee," said Zink. "That was definitely the turning point in the match as the momentum came to our side."

After tying the match 1-1, Campbellsville came out in the third set and once again used its serving to outmatch Shawnee State's defense. The offensive attack was much better and a lot more aggressive during the third and fourth sets as senior Rinata Aisena came through once again for the Lady Tigers.

Aisena Led CU with 20 kills and Kelly Moyer chipped in 15 and Jana Kortas recorded 13.

The fourth and final set was a nail-bitter as Campbellsville and Shawnee went into extra play with the Lady Tigers winning 26-24.

Campbellsville (19-6, 11-3 MSC) will return home against Mid-South Conference rival Georgetown College (25-8, 12-2 MSC) on Tuesday, Oct. 29. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Powell Athletic Center.
