Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville University women's soccer scored five times in the first 23 minutes to dash the hopes and dreams for University of the Cumberlands and put an end to the Patriots' season with an 11-0 win.
Campbellsville (11-4-1, 6-3 MSC) used seven first half goals to put the game out of reach as the Patriots (2-15, 2-7 MSC) never had an answer for the explosive offensive attack by CU.
"We moved the ball well and finished our opportunities early in the game," said Coach Thom Jones. "We set the tone early and dominated the whole game."
Mhairi Fyfe started the action in the fifth minute as Rachel Veatch shot from just outside the penalty box but the Cumberlands goalkeeper saved her shot. The rebound deflected right to Fyfe as she kicked in the first goal of the night.
On the next opportunity down field, CU took advantage again as Veatch had another shot blocked by the goalkeeper but she rebounded her own miss and made the score 2-0.
Just two minutes later, Hannah Harris got in on the action as she raced past the Patriot defense, on a break away goal.
Senior Jessica Ralph was playing her last regular season game at Citizens Bank Field and Finley Stadium, and she didn't disappoint the 200-plus fans in attendance. Ralph scored three goals in a nine-minute span in the first half for her first hat trick of the year and second of her career.
"Jess wanted to stay in the game and get more but it wasn't worth the risk of injury," said Jones.
Ralph broke the CU career goals scored record on Sept. 13 against Asbury University. Her record now sits at 51 goals in 79 career games. But Wednesday wasn't about her adding on to her record because she set another scoring record for most goals in a single season with 16.
"I have had great success as a player," said Ralph. "But making it this far in college shows how great of a team I have been able to play with these past four years. While it was definitely a personal goal of mine to break records, the success of our team as a whole means so much more to me."
Just 30 seconds after Ralph recorded her hat trick, Devon Burnside used a sweet move to cross the goalkeeper on her own breakaway and extended the first half lead to 7-0.
The second half was much like the first and Campbellsville showed its No. 11 ranking in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) is not a fluke.
Fyfe led off the final 45 minutes with another goal and eventually scored her third later in the game for her second hat trick of the year. She now has 14 goals on the season, only two behind Ralph.
Rachel Veatch and Hannah Harris also scored their second goals of the game; both on a cross from Chelsea Gill.
Brandie Hagerman had four saves in 63 minutes of shutout action, while backup goalkeeper Brianna Anderson did not face a shot on goal.
CU women's soccer broke another record on the night as it was the most goals scored in a single game for the Lady Tigers (11). It is also the most regular season goals scored by the team (57), which also ties CU's overall single-season record, and is the best regular season win percentage (.719) in program history.
Campbellsville finished its regular season in third place in the Mid-South Conference. The Lady Tigers will host the quarterfinals of the Mid-South Conference Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 9 against the No. 6 seed in the tournament, which will be determined Saturday, Nov. 2.
