LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Campbellsville held a 50-29 advantage in kills against the University of the Cumberlands tonight and rolled into the Mid-South Conference semifinals 3-0, 25-20, 25-18, 25-10.
The win pits the Lady Tigers against Georgetown College Saturday at noon, an opponent that owns a couple of victories over CU this season. Georgetown beat Rio Grande to earn its spot in the semis.
"We played well in that third set, but the first two were a little spotty," said Coach Amy Zink.
The Lady Patriots (17-12), who had lost twice this year to Campbellsville (25-7) in six sets, had a gold star on their record after a five-set win over MSC No. 2 Seed Georgetown (30-9) during the regular season.
"That was in the girls' heads a little. We talked about it," continued Zink. "We know that in tournament play anything can happen."
All four the the tournament's higher seeds won three-set matches in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament. St. Catharine beat Shawnee State and plays No. 1 Seed Lindsey Wilson, which dispatched Cumberland University, at 10 a.m. Saturday at the MidAmerica Sports Center.
Campbellsville trailed only twice in the three-set match. Ahead 17-16 in Set 1, Zink called a timeout ans her troops responded with a 4-0 run that put CU in the driver's seat.
Rinata Aisena sandwiched a kill and an ace around a Jana Kortas kill that gave CU a 24-18 lead and Daiane Souza finished the Lady Patriots off with tip kill at 25-20.
Aisena led Campbellsville with 17 kills, six in Set 1. Aisena got 12 kills of support from fellow senior Kelly Moyer.
The Lady Tigers were rolling in Set 2, sprinting to an 18-9 edge. But UC called timeout and it took four kills (three by Moyer) in the last five points to hold off a Patriots' comeback.
Set 3 was never in doubt, CU as rolled out to leads of 6-2 and 16-6 with 11 kills and two blocks highlighting the runs.
CU hit at a .369 clip compared to UC's .120.
