LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In a match featuring reversals of fortune, Campbellsville ended up with more misfortune in the end, exiting the Mid-South Conference Tournament semifinals to No. 15 Georgetown in five sets.
The Lady Tigers, who suffered five of their eight losses to the top two teams in the MSC, end their conference post season at 25-8. Georgetown (31-9) meets No. 9 Lindsey Wilson College at 5 today at the MidAmerica Sports Center.
It was the second straight year Georgetown has beaten CU in the semifinals.
CU came out of the blocks in good shape, winning the first set 25-22, recording 15 kills along the way. But as the kills diminished so did Campbellsville's presence in the match. CU lost Sets 2, 4 and 5, 14-25, 16-25 and 7-17.
The Lady Tigers rallied from their dismal Set 2 performance to pin a 25-15 loss on Georgetown. CU built margins of 14-7 and 21-14 before closing the match on a four-point run punctuated by Giselle Hernandez's set-ending kill. Hernandez had three kills in the set.
With some momentum in its favor, CU laid an egg in Set 4.
Coach Amy Zink called timeouts trailing 1-5 and 10-16, but could never get any closer than five points after Georgetown reeled off a 4-1 run in the middle of the set.
The Lady Tigers were never really in the fifth set, falling behind 7-1, forcing Zink to call her last timeout of the match. The Lady Tigers closed to within 12-7 after Kelly Moyer got her second kill of the set and an attack error by G-town. But GC Coach Nick Griffin called a timeout and his squad responded with a three-point run to end the match.
