Tigers unable to stop No. 2 Cumberlands

Box Score

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville University was unable to contain the second-ranked University of the Cumberlands in the H&W Sport Shop Mid-South Conference Game of the Week, as the Patriots rolled out 600 yards of total offense in a 70-17 loss for the Tigers.

"This loss is on me as the head coach. I got away from focusing our guys on us this week and focused too much on how good the Cumberlands is and what we had to do to compete. I think that led us to be tight and tense," said CU head coach Perry Thomas. "The guys played bard, but we made too many mistakes against a very good team. We will get back to focusing on us, and these guys will respond. This game will not define them."

The Tigers were plagued by turnovers, losing 3-of-5 fumbles and throwing one interception. Cumberlands held CU to its lowest offensive production of the season at 241 yards with 107 yards passing and 134 on the ground.

The Patriots wasted little time, marching down field in the first four minutes to take a 7-0 lead on a 13-yard touchdown run by Hunter Lewis. It was the first of two first-quarter TD runs for Lewis, who finished the game with 101 yards on 10 carries.

Will Ward put the Tigers on the scoreboard with 1:11 to play in the opening quarter with a 36-yard field goal, but the 14-3 margin was the closest Campbellsville got all game.

Adam Craig opened the second quarter with a 44-yard quarterback keeper up the middle to stretch Cumberlands' lead to 21-3, and then found Iquan Davis on an 18-yard TD strike to make it 28-3 with 9:47 left in the first half.

Campbellsville scored its first touchdown of the game with 3:57 to play in the second quarter when Tajh Milliken found Steph'Von Haynes on a 5-yard connection for the tight end's first TD of the season.

Cumberlands added two more touchdowns before halftime, including a 43-yard wide-out pass from Dead to Maleek Rooks. Dead finished the day with 103 all-purpose yards, including a 15-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, which made the Patriots' lead 49-10.

Backup running back Zeke Elder finished the game with 79 yards rushing on 13 carries and three touchdowns after scoring with 36 seconds left in the first half on a 3-yard run, 11:30 left in the fourth quarter on a 9-yard run and added a 1-yard run with 1:08 remaining in the game.

Campbellsville scored its final touchdown with 7:50 to play in the game on a 1-yard run by Larry Walls.

Millike was 6-of-11 passing for 80 yards and a TD as Campbellsville's starting quarterback. He also had one interception. Bryan Parnes came off the bench for 2-of-7 passing and 27 yards. Jarrod Harrington and Chatman had 48 and 41 yards receiving, respectively, on three catches each.

Defensively, Shaunski Lawrence led the Tigers for the second straight week with 10 tackles, while Nick Reed, Danile DeLeon and Davian Evans-Dufrene each had eight tackles.

Despite the non-divisional loss, Campbellsville (4-4, 3-0 MSC West) remains in the driver's seat in the MSC West Division. The Tigers will travel to Montgomery, Ala., next Saturday, Nov. 9 to meet No. 15 Faulkner University (7-2, 3-1 MSC West). CU will then return home for Senior Day on Nov. 16 against No. 22 Reinhardt University (5-3, 3-0).
