CLEVELAND, Tenn. — Campbellsville cleaned up its play after a close first set and went on to defeat Union University 3-0 in the Lady Tigers' second Day-1 match of the NCCAA Mid-East Region.
CU moves on to Saturday's pool play and a noon match-up with Mid-Continent University. The team with the best record from pool play will be crowned the Mid-East's champion. Campbellsville and Lee, which the Lady Tigers meet at 6:00 Saturday, are both 2-0 after Day 1.
The Lady Tigers used a balanced attack in coming from behind to edge the Bulldogs 25-23 in Set 1, using a Jana Kortas kill to seal the win. It was one of four kills for the sophomore from Simpsonville, Ky. in the opening set.
Giselle Hernandez, who led CU with 12 kills, put CU up 23-22, a lead it would never relinquish.
Campbellsville went on to win Sets 2 and 3, 25-13 and 25-19, to complete the shutout win. Actually CU was down 8-6 in Set 2 and went on a 19-5 run to salt that set away.
Kelly Moyer joined Hernandez in double-figure with 10 kills and Rinata Aisena added nine. Daiane Souza had eight put-aways.
The Lady Tigerrs hit .310 for the match compared to Union's .165 and had 17 more kills and six more digs.
Caitlin Dresing led the defensive charge with 20 digs, and Audrey Sanders had 15.
Jackie Schwieger assisted on 38 of CU's 46 assists with Aisena and Haley Bechtel collecting two each.
