CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Trailing by as many as six points in the first half the Lady Tigers put together an impressive eight minutes of play to flip that situation and go on to survive Pikeville, 76-62.
Â
Lindsey Burd had a put-back that gave CU (6-0, 2-1) a 21-20 lead and then the Lady Tigers went on to finish the half on a 21-11 run. That run was fueled by four first-half 3s by Angie Lawrence. Lawrence had two 3s wrapped around a couple of free throws by Ellen Sholtes that pushed Campbellsville out to a 29-22 lead.
Â
"They came out and really did a good job," said Coach Ginger Colvin. "But it is really good for us to play in a game like this where we need to get baskets and score points late.
Â
"In conference you're going to have to grind every game."
Â
Katie Alen, who had a tough night from the floor (3-for-15) came up with basket that pushed CU out to a 10-point lead and Caroline Owen's free throws provided the final margin.
Â
Lawrence had six 3s on the night and one at the four-minute mark was the potion CU needed after the Lady Bears had cut the score to 65-60.
Â
Pikeville (1-4, 1-1) was led in scoring by Callisha Johnson's 28 points.
Â
Campbelleville was led by Lawrence's 22 points, 16 in the first half. Lindsey Burd, who went to the free throw line four times (hitting four) in a three-minute span of the second half, scored 13 points and pulled down a team-high 14 rebounds.
Â
The Lady Tigers lost Kristen Jacob to fouls with 15:22 to go in the game and were trying to get her out of the game when she was whistled for her fifth.
Â
CU out-rebounded Pikeville 51-40 and hit 72 percent of its free throws, Sholtes gong 10-for-14 on her way to 17 points.
Â
The Lady Tigers go on the road for the first time this season when they travel Saturday, Dec. 7 to Lindenwood University – Belleville (Ill.). Tipoff at 7:00.
