CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – As Campbellsville (2-0) used a career game in its regular-season opener on Tuesday, the Lady Tigers stepped back into the record books tonight as CU scored its second straight 100-point game and steamrolled Brescia University, 108-61.
Campbellsville may have had an early 13-3 run, but Coach Ginger Colvin wasn't pleased with her team's intensity.
"Although we came out flat, we overcame that by overmatching Brescia with their depleted squad," said Colvin. "We were able to use our athletic ability tonight, but we wont be able to rely on pure ability all year. We have to be sharper overall."
As the first half started to wind down, the defense started to step up and used transition offense off turnovers to record nine baskets in a row.
Finally, Brescia stopped the bleeding as Lauren Rodgers made her only 3-point basket of the game. Olivia Moore also chipped in for the Bearcats and scored 13 points. Moore finished the game with a double-double, 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Rodgers had nine points and nine boards. Julianna Whitfill led Brescia with 20 points.
The Lady Tigers went into half-time with a 52-24 lead.
Coming out of the break, CU led by 28 points and eventually went up by 40 in the early stages of the second half. The Bearcats showed some fight as they fought back and whittled the lead to 29, but that was as close as they would get. Backup point guard LeeAnn Grider scored two of her four points to get CU back on track.
"One positive from the game tonight was we played unselfish," said Colvin. "Nobody cares about scoring all the points as long as the team wins and that's a great quality to have at the beginning of the season."
Unselfish was an understatement as more than half of Campbellsville's field goals came off assists, with 25 passes producing 45 buckets.
Grider was the biggest distributor as the Jamestown, Ky., native recorded nine assists and only one turnover in just her second collegiate game. Starting point guard, Katie Allen chipped in with six more assists and only two turnovers.
NCAA Division II transfer, Angie Lawrence, led CU for the second straight game and recorded 17 points off 6-for-9 shooting from the field and 3-for-5 from behind the arch.
Every Lady Tiger who was dressed ended with at least one basket. But for the second straight game, Campbellsville also had six scorers in double figures.
Mary Jehlik and Daizah Kimberland recorded their first double-digit scoring game of the season as the duo scored 14 and 13 points. Kimberland led CU with 10 rebounds, six on the offensive glass, for a double-double.
Ellen Sholtes, Madison Clements and Allen were also in double figures as they scored 12, 10, and 11 points, respectively.
Lindsey Burd followed Kimberland with eight rebounds, including a team-high seven defensive boards.
It is the first time since 2011 that the Lady Tigers have broken the 100-point mark in consecutive games. Campbellsville broke the 100-point barrier against University of the Cumberlands in the 2011 regular season finale and also in the first round of the Mid-South Conference Tournament against St. Catherine College.
It is also the first time since the 1986-87 seasons that CU has opened with 100-point games - both against St. Catharine College. Campbellsville last did that under Hall of Fame Head Coach Donna Wise. But guess who was a freshman guard on the team? If you guessed the young Ginger High Colvin, you were right.
"Although we haven't seen this happen since 1986, it's great to see how the program has been built by Coach Wise," said Colvin. "But it doesn't take anything away from Brescia as they had only six players dressing and were just outnumbered. We look at the defensive side more than anything and giving up 61 points is a tough thing to take from this game."
No. 9 Campbellsville will be back in action tomorrow night, Saturday, Nov. 9, as the Lady Tigers host Huntington University (Ind.). Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. EST in Powell Athletic Center.
