Lady Tigers sweep Midway in home opener

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- Initially scheduled for Wednesday, the Lady Tiger Softball team took to its home diamond on Thursday, Feb. 28 for the first time this season, hosting Midway College. CU swept the doubleheader and outscored Midway 24-1, through 10 innings of play.

The Lady Tigers won the games by scores of 13-0 and 11-1, each finishing in five innings.

Kelsi Pardue started the day off doing the pitching duties for CU. Pardue pitched three innings with 6 strikeouts; giving up zero hits, zero runs, and only two base runners.

Offensively, the Lady Tigers started game one on a high note with a Emma Napier leadoff homerun to deep right-center field off a 3-1 count. CU did not score again until the bottom of the third inning.

Napier started things off again for CU, in what turned out to be a monstrous third inning for the Lady Tigers, reaching first base on a one-out walk. Napier reached third base on a fielding error, hit in the air around first base, by Kristin Benton. Taylor Borders loaded the bases with another one-out walk. Napier scored the second run of the game off a Heather Oakley walk, before Sara Paragon recorded a two-RBI single to left-center field, CU 4-0.

A pair of RBI doubles from Alysaa Barker (two RBIs) and Shelby Ray, and a Kacie Vincent RBI single set up Napier's second home run of the contest. This time Napier went to left field on a 1-0 count, scoring two. CU led 10-0 heading into the top of the fourth.

Courtney Turpin took over the pitching duties for CU in the fourth inning, recording three strikeouts all in the fourth. Turpin allowed only one hit and allowed three base runners in her two scoreless innings of work.

CU scored three more insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth, but Midway never answered. Campbellsville out-hit the Eagles 11-1. Pardue (3-2) was credited with the win.

The offense kept rolling for the Lady Tigers in the latter half of the double-header. Victoria Decker received the start in the circle for Campbellsville, picking up her first win of the season.

CU jumped ahead early with a seven-run first inning off five hits. Borders, Paragon (two), Barker, Ray, Erin Benton, and Napier all had an RBI first inning. No runners were left on base.

In the second, Borders scored Vincent off a one-out sacrifice fly to second base.

Taylor Wroe relieved Decker in the top of third, giving up no runs heading into the Lady Tigers' offensive half of the inning.

CU put three more final insurance runs on the board in the bottom of the third. The RBIs came this time off the bat of Barker, Napier and Vincent.

Wroe gave up just two hits through two innings before Martina Riney was called on to close out an 11-1 victory.

Campbellsville (5-4) is scheduled to open Mid-South Conference play this Saturday, March 2, at home, when it hosts Lindsey Wilson College in a double-header starting at 2 p.m. EST. There is a chance the game could be postponed due to weather. Check CampbellsvilleTigers.com for details Saturday morning.
