GULF SHORES, Ala — The Lady Tigers out-hit Central Methodist University (Mo.), 10-9, but was unable to make up for a three-run homer in the bottom of the third, falling 5-2. Campbellsville University left nine runners on base in the seven-inning contest Sunday.
Lead-off batter Emma Napier went 3-for-4 on the afternoon, ending the tournament with a .423 batting average and six extra base hits.
The senior plated the first run of the game on a solo home run in the top of the third, putting the Lady Tigers on top 1-0.
CMU didn't allow CU to lead for long, though, as junior Bri Ford answered with a three-run homer of her own in the bottom of the inning, bringing the Eagles ahead by two, 3-1.
CMU added yet another in its next at bat after a triple from Mary Kate Townley followed by a RBI-single from Madison Watson.
Freshman CU pitcher Kelsi Pardue was sent in to relieve Victoria Decker, striking out the next two batters to get Campbellsville out of the inning.
Pardue went on to total seven strikeouts on the afternoon and allow only one run in the fifth inning, making it 5-1.
CU went on a two-out seventh-inning rally after Napier hit a single to left field. Two more singles followed from Kacie Vincent and Taylor Borders, Borders scoring Napier to put another Campbellsville run on the board. Unfortunately, CMU got out of the inning with a strikeout, leaving two runners on base.
Following Napier's three-hit performance was Borders and Kristen Benton with two hits a piece. Heather Oakley ended with a double, Vincent with a single.
The loss ends CU's run in the Gulf Shores Invitational, sending the Lady Tigers home with a 2-3 record on the weekend and 10-8 overall.
