CU continues to dominate in sweep over UVa.-Wise

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — The Lady Tigers continue to dominate the Mid-South Conference (MSC), sweeping UVa.-Wise in this afternoon's double-header, 2-1 and 14-1. The wins put Campbellsville at 10-0 in MSC play and continues its now 10-game winning streak.



Campbellsville 2, Wise 1

 

Senior leadoff batter Emma Napier continued her hitting spree this afternoon, pelting a walk-off homer to defeat Wise 2-1. The walk-off was the second of the week for the shortstop who is currently batting .500 on the season.

 

Pitcher Victoria Decker allowed only three hits in the game and distributed six strikeouts. The freshman now has a 10-1 record and remains undefeated in MSC play (5-0).

 

The Lady Cavaliers were the first to cross the plate in the top of the second inning when freshman Mindy Combs cleared the fence in left field. (1-0 Wise).

 

Campbellsville remained silent until the sixth when three hits gave way to the first CU run. Sophomores Kristin Benton and Sara Paragon began the inning with back-to-back singles to centerfield. Next in the lineup, Taylor Borders, was given a free ride to first after a walk.

 

Heather Oakley was the Lady Tiger to push across the run, hitting a shot to short. The Lady Cav's were unable to make the force play at the plate, allowing Benton to tie the score on Oakley's hit, 1-1.

 

Wise couldn't manage a hit in the top of the seventh, putting CU back up to bat after a quick three outs. Napier stepped up to the plate, putting the second pitch out of the park for the Lady Tiger 2-1 victory.

 

Napier and Paragon both ended with two hits, followed by Benton and Oakley with one.

 

Campbellsville left eight runners on base.

  

Campbellsville 14, Wise 1

 

CU bats were unstoppable in their second match-up versus UVa.-Wise, using 13 hits to dismantle the team by run-rule. Campbellsville batted .520 as a team in their 25 at bats, facing four different Lady Cav pitchers.

 

Kristin Benton batted .1000 on the afternoon, going three-for-three with three RBIs.

 

The Lady Tigers put up the first run in the bottom of the first. Leadoff batter Emma Napier was given a free ride after being hit by a pitch. She was advanced to second on a Kacie Vincent's sacrifice bunt and brought in on a single to right field from Benton.

 

Wise tied the score in the top of the third, using three hits to push across the run (1-1).

 

Napier responded in the bottom of the inning, leading off with her 12th homer of the season, second on the afternoon (2-1 CU). 

 

She was soon followed by singles from Benton and Sara Paragon. Freshman Taylor Borders was the next Lady Tiger to hit the long-ball, putting across three Campbellsville runs. Borders would go on to finish the game with five RBIs. CU ended the inning up 5-1.

 

The four-run inning was only the tip of the iceberg for Campbellsville, which used seven hits and three Wise errors for a nine-run fourth inning to close the lopsided win.

 

Campbellsville ended with 13 hits versus Wise's seven.

 

Benton led with three hits in the second game, followed by Borders and Heather Oakley with two.

 

Napier scored four times in the game after being given three free bases to go along with her homer. Kennedy Shutter, Erin Benton, Paragon, Alyssa Barker, and Shelby Ray all ended with one hit apiece.

 

Lady Tigers with RBIs include: Borders (5), K. Benton (3), Shutter (2), Napier (1), E. Benton (1), Paragon (1), and Oakley (1).

 

Freshman pitcher Kelsi Pardue pitched four innings for the Lady Tigers, allowing seven hits and striking out 10. Martina Riney finished the last inning, allowing no hits and striking out two.
