CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Lady Tiger Softball added two more wins Sunday as they swept Shawnee State, 1-0 and 4-3.
The victories bring Campbellsville University to a 31-11 record, tying rival Lindsey Wilson College at the top spot of the Mid-South Conference with a 19-3 conference slate. The Bears fall to 18-14 overall, 12-8 in the MSC.
Campbellsville will travel to Georgetown College on Tuesday, April 16 for a MSC doubleheader. Game time is 3 p.m. EDT.
GAME 1 - Campbellsville 1, Shawnee State 0
Freshman Victoria Decker started her day out with two strikeouts in the first inning , totaling nine on the day. The Bears were stifled, as Decker only allowed four hits in the complete-game outing.
Shawnee's offense didn't even see first base until the top of the fourth inning, when Ericka Leighty hit a single through the hole at short. Another single from Leighty and two singles from Abbey Barrett were all Shawnee could manage to get past Decker.
CU's bats weren't much better in this slow-paced game. The third inning was the highlight of the offense when freshman first-time starter Adrean Jordan, on a 1-0 count, smacked her first collegiate home run over the heads of the fans in centerfield. After that, CU still had trouble making things happen at the plate, only totaling three more hits for the game.
Players with those hits include: Jordan, Emma Napier, Shelby Ray, and Taylor Borders.
GAME 2 - Campbellsville 4, Shawnee State 3
With a pitcher switch for both teams, offenses were a little less stagnant this game. Shawnee's new pitcher allowed eight hits, while CU's three second-game pitchers allowed nine. Courtney Turpin started the second game in the circle. She threw only three pitches in the first inning and CU's defense— namely second baseman Shelby Ray, did the rest of the work, fielding a pop-up and then a grounder to second.
It took until the bottom of the fourth for the Lady Tigers to get hot at the plate again, and the spark was none other than Adrean Jordan, who singled to center, scoring Kristin Benton, who was on second after a one-out double. Jordan was 4-for-5 on the day, with three RBIs.
In the fifth, Emma Napier stepped up and drove in Kacie Vincent, who had reached on a bunt single. Napier drove one to right-center for the RBI-triple. Shelby Ray scored Napier with a sacrifice squeeze.
In CU's last at-bat, Jordan popped yet another ball over the fence for her second home run of the day.
Shawnee's quiet offense made quite a ruckus in its last at-bat, in the top of the seventh. Kelise Pardue entered to take over in the circle for Martina Riney, who pitched the two previous innings. Just when CU thought the game was over, the Bears proceeded to collect two singles before SSU's Abbey Barrett knocked one out of the park, a three-run homer. Two fielding errors let another Bear advance to second until finally the Bear's burst of momentum was squashed as the last batter grounded out to third.
