Foster, Shirley lead Tigers to victory in Bluegrass Spring Invite

GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- Scott Foster and Trey Shirley's senior leadership led Campbellsville University men's golf to its first tournament victory of the spring Tuesday in the Bluegrass Spring Classic at Cherry Blossom Golf Club.

Scott shot 3-under par, 69, in the opening round Monday, including a 33 on the front nine, and then followed with an even par, 72, to win low medalist honors in the tournament. Shirley followed with an even par performance of 71 and 73 in his two rounds to help pace the Tigers. The next closest golfer was Shawnee State University's Nick Saunders, who finished in third place at 2-over par.

As a team, the Tigers shot -1 Monday at 287 with Cody Goodwin shooting 73 and Kelby Robinson shooting 74 to round out the Tigers' Top 4. Robinson shot 78 Tuesday to finish with a two-day score of 152, tied for ninth, and Goodwin shot 81 to finish tied for 14th at 154. Matthew Razor was Campbellsville's fifth player, shooting a 75 on Tuesday to bounce back from an 87 in the first round. Andrew Jansen also competed as an individual for CU, finishing tied with Razor for 30th place with a two-round score of 162 (82-80).

"The team played really well the first day and held it together with the rough wind today (Tuesday)," said CU men's golf coach Kenny Lawson. "With this win, this should give good confidence for the players heading into the conference championship."

Campbellsville's team score of 585 was good enough to beat Cumberland University (Tenn.) by 25 strokes. The Cumberland Bulldogs were second with a two-day score of 610, despite matching the Tigers' second round score of 298 on Tuesday. Shawnee State University was third at 613, followed by Georgetown College at 620 and University of Pikeville at 621. Asbury University and St. Catharine College tied for sixth with a score of 627, while Kentucky State University was last with a score of 929.

The tournament win was the first for the Tigers since winning the Don Bishop Invitational and Mid-South Conference Fall Tournament on their home course in September 2009. It's the first spring tournament win on the road since claiming the MSC Spring Tournament title at Cherry Blossom in April 2008.

Campbellsville will return to action April 20-22 in the Mid-South Conference Championships at Maywood County Club in Bardstown, Ky.
