CU defeats Georgetown, falls to Lindsey to end MSC run

KINGSPORT, Tenn. — Campbellsville won its second match-up of the day against Georgetown, 3-1, but lost to Lindsey by two, 4-2. The loss ends the Mid-South Conference Tournament run for CU.

During the day, Campbellsville reached 40 wins (40-15) for the third time in five years. The Lady Tigers, ranked No. 25 in last week's coaches' poll, will await a potential at-large bid to the NAIA National Tournament. Lindsey Wilson College and Cumberland University will receive the automatic bids from the MSC.

Campbellsville 3, Georgetown 1
The bats weren't hot for either team, but a three-run fourth inning proved to be all that was needed for CU's 3-1 victory over Georgetown. Heather Oakley had a two-run homer in the inning, ultimately allowing Campbellsville to advance to the next round.

Georgetown, who outlasted UVA-Wise in a tournament record 15 innings earlier in the day, was the first team on the board, 1-0, after Taylor Shaw began the inning with a single to centerfield and was hit in by another single from Shelby Engle. Shaw hit 3-for-3 in the game to lead Georgetown.

It took Campbellsville an inning to respond, but the Lady Tigers managed to get on top in the fourth. Emma Napier started the rally with a single to center. Shelby Ray advanced Napier on a bunt followed by another single from freshman Taylor Borders to score Napier.

Oakley kept the momentum going, blasting a ball over the fence to score both herself and Borders and bring the score to 3-1 CU.

Georgetown left three more runners on base in the next innings but couldn't score.

Freshman Kelsi Pardue recorded the win in the circle, pitching the first five innings and allowing four hits, one run, and striking out nine.

Martina Riney finished on the mound, allowing only two hits, no runs, and striking out two.

Kristin Benton, Brooke Boils, Napier, Ray, Borders, and Oakley each managed one hit in the contest for Campbellsville.

In addition to Shaw's three hits, Georgetown's hits came from Sandy Young, Emily Snow and Engle, who was also the pitcher of record, dropping to 2-2 on the year.

Lindsey 4, Campbellsville 2
The Lady Tigers remained on the heels of Lindsey Wilson in the loser's bracket final, even tying the score in the fourth, but a two-run fifth inning for Lindsey secured the Raider's 4-2 victory.  Campbellsville only managed four hits in the game, batting .143 compared to LWC's .357.

The loss ends the MSC Tourney run for the Lady Tigers.

Campbellsville was first on the board after lead-off batter Emma Napier reached safely on a misplayed grounder, the first of four errors for Lindsey. Shelby Ray followed with a bunt and also landed on first safely on a bobbled ball, Napier advancing to third. A Taylor Borders grounder to second secured the run (1-0 CU).

Lindsey was quick to respond, though, putting three on quickly from their initial batters for two runs (2-1 LWC).

Neither team managed any runs in their next at-bats until a Heather Oakley homer in the top of the fourth brought CU even with Lindsey, 2-2.

Lady Raider Antoinette Jenkins got the momentum going for Lindsey again in the fifth, beginning the inning with a single to centerfield. Kristina Krupinski followed with her second double of the game, scoring Jenkins, and was then hit in by a single from Travatia Bowden (4-2 LWC).

Campbellsville was unable to respond, allowing Lindsey to take the victory and advance to the championship game tomorrow against Cumberland University.

The four Lady Tigers with hits include Napier, Oakley, Adrean Jordan, and Sara Paragon. Oakley and Taylor Borders each had an RBI.

Freshman Victoria Decker pitched for CU, allowing 10 hits and four runs while striking out four.
