Volleyball gets beat in straight sets at rival Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, Ky. – Campbellsville Lady Tigers (5-1, 4-1) traveled to 7th ranked Georgetown College (11-1, 4-0) Thursday night and could not overcome 10 unforced errors, losing the match in straight sets (21-25, 23-25, 21-25).

The first set started out in favor of CU as the Lady Tigers won the first three points of the match on a kill by Giselle Hernandez and two attack errors by Georgetown. Campbellsville even went ahead with a score of 6-2, but could not hold GC down for long.

Georgetown scored seven points in a row that forced coach Amy Zink to call an early timeout with the score at 10-6 in favor of Georgetown.

After the timeout, CU started with a kill by Daiane Souza but could not get in any rhythm as both teams traded punches the rest of the first set and Georgetown winning, 25-21.

"Georgetown is a great team and they came out ready to play," said coach Amy Zink. "We just could not capitalize on opportunities in the first set."

The second set started out and Campbellsville took total control scoring the first four points (4-0). After a few points by Georgetown, Campbellsville ended up taking the lead 11-5. But that was the biggest lead for the Lady Tigers all night.

Georgetown went on a 10-4 run, making Zink call her first timeout in the second set.

Again after the timeout, CU and GC traded punches until the Lady Tigers scored three points in a row off two kills by Rinata Aisena and one by Jana Kortas.

This forced Georgetown to call its first timeout of the night with CU leading (23-20). Whatever coach Nick Griffin said to his team in the break sparked a little fire under GC and they ended up winning the final five points to take the second set 25-23.

Unforced errors hurt the Lady Tigers and helped GC win the first two sets.

"Volleyball can be a crazy game sometimes," said senior, Lexis Lloyd. "We had a solid lead and got comfortable. We just could not finish when we were on top."

The third set, Campbellsville came out and started exactly the same as they did the first two, a kill by Aisena put the Lady Tigers on the board first but GC would not give in and kept capitalizing on the CU mistakes.

The Lady Tigers were down 10-7 early in the third set, but came back and took the lead on a kill by Souza, service aces by Caitlin Dresing and Jackie Schwieger and two more kills by Aisena, giving CU the lead 13-12.

But the lead did not hold for long as Georgetown took the next point and eventually the rest of the match winning 25-21.

The Lady Tigers had four service aces but more than offset that with 10 service errors.

"Being aggressive on serves is a part of our game plan," said Zink. "We made too many service errors tonight but that wasn't the difference maker. We just did not perform well enough overall to win."

Campbellsville is (1-4) against rival Georgetown since Zink took over the reigns in 2010, but the rivalry does not bother Zink.

"We play each game like its just another opponent," said Zink. "The rivalry with Georgetown and Campbellsville is for the fans and not as much for the teams. We all get excited when playing against each other, but the rivalry is with ourself. We fight against ourselves, not against the opponent."

Campbellsville is on the road for eight more matches the rest of September, including tough competition at the Olivet Nazarene tournament September 20-21.

That has been the norm for Zink as she always tries to play the best teams in the non-conference portion of her schedule. With the new schedule format this year, there are less tournaments on the weekends and more mid-week matches against conference teams.

"I don't want to have a weak schedule, get to the national tournament and be nowhere," Zink mentioned in earlier interviews. "I went after some really good teams saying 'we'll come to you' just to get them on our schedule. Tougher competition down the stretch will only keep the girls playing hard when the post season comes around."

Campbellsville (5-1, 4-1) will travel to Springfield, Ky. to take on St. Catherine College (8-5, 2-1) on Tuesday with the match starting at 7:00
