CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Round one of the Sixth Annual Don Bishop Invitational is finished and Campbellsville University Lady Tiger golf sits six strokes behind first place, Lindsey Wilson College.
The Lady Tigers turned in a score of 325 on the day, which puts them in second place over University of Pikeville by 24 strokes.
"Overall, not a bad day," said coach Brent Vernon. "We have to do a better job on the first nine holes tomorrow."
Campbellsville shot 172 as a team on the front nine holes and 153 on the back nine. With that 19 stroke difference, the Lady Tigers could be sitting pretty if the first nine holes were played a little better.
"We did a really good job buckling down on the back nine," said Vernon. "That shows the mental toughness the girls have and their willingness to not give up after a bad first nine."
Campbellsville's Cassidy Scantland turned in low score of the day for the women's side with a 1-over 73.
Scantland started her round with a bogey on her first hole 10 and a bogey on par four 17. Other than the two dropped shots, she played par golf for her first nine holes.
On the front nine, Scantland bogeyed the par three No. 2, but came back with a birdie on the par five third hole. She then birdied par three holes No. 6 and No. 9 making her two under for the front nine.
"Cassidy has started out great this tournament," said Vernon. "She could have easily shot 70 or lower today but a few breaks didn't go her way. That's golf. But she will come out focused again tomorrow and compete like she has all fall."
The Lady Tigers also had another player in the top 10 after the first round. Senior Kayla Kincer shot 80 while Ashley Goodin was just outside the Top 10 with a 12-over, 84.
Campbellsville had eight total golfers in the field today but only the top four players counted for the team score: Scantland (73), Kincer (80), Goodin (84) and Olivia Parrott (88).
Grace Gupton shot an 86 but played as an individual; Caitlyn Wilkerson shot 88, but played in the top five. Anna Marie Hyatt shot 92 and Annie Schakat shot 110, both played as individuals.
"We definitely have a chance to come back tomorrow," said Vernon. "All we can do is put our best effort forward and see what happens."
Round two of the Don Bishop Invitational starts at 8:30 a.m. ET with a shotgun start.
