CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – CU entered Day 2 of the Don Bishop Invitational down six strokes to the Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders. With the Lady Tigers shooting consistent rounds, they slipped by Lindsey and pulled out the come-from-behind victory, 655 (325-330) to 656 (319-337).
"Today was a great win," said Coach Brent Vernon. "We didn't play our best golf but the course played tougher today and we weathered the storm."
And weathered the storm they did. Freshman Cassidy Scantland had a total of 10 bogeys and only one birdie on the day and shot an 81. But that goes to say that the pins were in tougher spots today. Yesterday she came out firing at the pins and had the overall low of 73. But with the pins in a tougher spots today.
Scantland still hung on to win the first collegiate tournament of her career in only her second start. She beat Katie Bowling of Lindsey Wilson and Katy Humphrey of University of Pikeville by four strokes to take first place.
"Cassidy had a great tournament," said Vernon. "She struggled a bit today but did not let that keep her from staying focused. This is the first of many tournaments to come her way."
Scantland's par on No. 17 from the trees may have been the difference, sinking an 18 footer for a par four. She narrowly missed birdie on 18.
Campbellsville also had three other competitors finish in the top 10. Kayla Kincer was tied for fifth with an 80-82 (162) and Ashley Goodin placed seventh with an 84-80 (164).
Goodin was the low Lady Tiger on the day, beating her Day 1 score by four strokes.
Campbellsville's top five rounded out with Olivia Parrot, 88-87 (175) and Caitlyn Wilkerson, 93-90 (183)
On the individual side, Anna Marie Hyatt and Grace Gupton were also playing in the second tournament of their careers and both finished in the top 15. Gupton shot 86-87 (173) finishing her in 12th place. And Hyatt had a great comeback in today's round as she shot 92-82 (174) placing her in 13th place.
"Winning by one shot over arch-rival Lindsey Wilson is a great feat," Vernon said. "It comes to show that every stroke counts and we can't give up after being down."
The Lady Tigers will travel to Georgetown, Ky on SeptMonday, 30 for the Mid-South Conference Fall Tournament at Cherry Blossom Golf Course.
