Lady Tigers sweep first tri-match of the season

MCKENZIE, Tenn.. – After a successful weekend against some tough competition, CU Lady Tiger volleyball kept their foot on the gas pedal tonight as they took care of Bethel University and Freed-Hardeman in straight sets, winning each match, 3-0.

Campbellsville started the match against host Bethel University and was not being aggressive on its serves. That led to the Wildcats being able to take advantage of the errors and attack with their offense.

But the Lady Tigers regained their focus and eventually had six total aces on the night.

Serving has been a strong point for CU this year as they have a total of 61 service aces so far in 2013. Last season at this point they only had 42. Campbellsville has used its serving as a main part of the offense this year and Rinata Aisena leads the Lady Tigers with 15 aces.

Campbellsville also struggled with its blocking against Bethel, which made the the Lady Tigers' defense pick up the slack. The Lady Tigers recorded four solo blocks and two assisted blocks on the night for a total of six.

Caitlin Dresing played solid on defense for CU as she recorded 20 service receptions. She also was tied for first in digs with sophomore Haley Bechtel; each recording 11. They both stepped up on the defensive side and helped lead the Lady Tigers. Aisena led Campbellsville with 14 kills in the first match. Senior Kelly Moyer returned to the team and recorded 10 kills in support. Aisena leads the team and ranks fifth with 4.26 kills per set.

Campbellsville took the first match against Bethel University, 25-22, 25-22, 25-15.

In the second match of the double header, Campbellsville took on Freed-Hardeman. The Lady Lions came into the match with a 5-4 record and 3-1 in the American Midwest Conference.

The Lady Tigers came out very aggressive against the Lions and dictated the whole match.

"We started the match by serving aggressively," said coach Amy Zink. "With us being so dominant with our serves, Freed could not get into much offense."

The Lady Tigers took the first set 25-12 and were led by Aisena with seven kills. Jackie Schwieger also had a big match as she started the first set with 11 assists. Audrey Sanders and Moyer both recorded two service aces in first set as well.

Campbellsville also won the second set, 25-19.

In the third set, the Lady Lions picked up a little momentum but Campbellsville was able to close the match out in straight sets, winning 25-20.

Campbellsville recorded eight service aces on the night. Leading the way was Sanders with four, Moyer with two, and Schwieger and Bechtel both each recording one.

"We had a great team attitude from the start of the match," said Zink. "Our aggressiveness on serves dictated the whole match for Freed-Hardeman's offense and that is why they struggled with their passing."

Aisena led the Lady Tigers with 16 kills in the match and Moyer supported her with 12. Daiane Souza recorded six kills in the second match along with Giselle Hernandez with four, Jana Kortas and Schwieger each had three apiece.

The Lady Tigers are back in action on Friday, Sept. 27 at Mid-South Conference foe, University of Pikeville. JV will play at 5 p.m. with the varsity playing at 7 p.m. Campbellsville will travel straight from Pikeville to Bluefield College in Bluefield, Va. to take on the Lady Rams at noon Saturday in another MSC matchup.
