Volleyball beats Bluefield 3-0 to give Zink 100th win

BLUEFIELD, Va. – After beating University of Pikeville just 15 hours before, Coach Amy Zink was eyeing another Mid-South Conference matchup and her 100th win as head coach of Campbellsville. The Lady Tigers and Zink reached that milestone by beating Bluefield in straight sets (25-13, 25-21, 25-9).

A lot of excitement was on the Lady Tiger bench today as all of the players, assistant coaches, and trainer knew what was going on. But none of them wanted to talk about the obvious as they thought they would jinx the team and their coach.

Bluefield scored the first point of the match but Campbellsville tied things up on the next play when Rinata Aisena recorded her first of 13 kills. After a service error by Caitlin Dresing and another kill by Aisena, Campbellsville took a 3-2 lead in which they did not surrender the rest of the first set, winning 25-13.

The second set was a different story as CU let off the gas pedal a little bit and struggled with its serves. Campbellsville ended the third set with six total service errors.

Campbellsville would not let that dampen its energy and focus as CU had 18 total kills throughout the second set, with Aisena coming up with seven of those. The Lady Tigers also had a .440 hitting percentage on all attacks in the second set and that is well above the team average for the year (.232).

The second set went back and fourth for CU and Bluefield. Neither team would take the lead more than three points until the score was 24-20 late in the set. Campbellsville ended up winning the second set point on a Lady Tiger block, 25-21.

The third set was much like the first. Campbellsville stepped on the gas pedal and didn't let up. CU took advantage of a set-high, four service aces. Dresing recorded two aces, and Kelly Moyer and Audrey Sanders one each.

The Lady Tigers also only had three errors in the set and played good enough for the liking of Zink.

"Our hitters were listening to the back row on attacks," said Zink. "We have worked on that a lot lately, because they can see the court better from their position."

Campbellsville took the third set 25-9 and gave Zink her 100th win in grand fashion. The Lady Tigers have now won four straight matches in straight sets and tallied their eighth of the year.

"I am grateful for the athletes I have coached as they put in all the hard work," said Zink on her 100 wins. "The girls are buying into our philosophies and it's paying off."

Zink is only in her fourth year at the helm of the Lady Tigers. But she has been at CU for the past 11 years. Zink came to CU as a freshman in 2003 and she quickly made her presence felt at the Libero position. Zink (Eckenfels thern) finished the year on the MSC Second Team. In her sophomore campaign, Zink had an even better season, picked for First Team All MSC and the Region XI Tournament Team.

Although she had a standout first two seasons, Zink's junior season was one for the record books. In 2005, she was picked for First Team All-MSC, MSC Co-Player of the Year, Region XI All Tournament Team, Region XI Libero of Year, and the NAIA Libero of the Year.  She was also the first and only Libero in history to be tabbed an All-American.

In her senior season, Zink was picked as Region XI Libero of the Year and NAIA Honorable Mention Team.

She has set numerous records as a Libero. Zink holds the records for NAIA and CU for most career digs (3,569), most matches with double-digit digs (152), and most matches with 20-plus digs (88). She had the records for most digs in a single season (1,229) and single season most digs per game (9.04). Both those marks were broken in 2007.

Zink is only the ninth coach in Campbellsville history to surpass 100 wins in their respected sports.

"Congratulations to Coach Zink on win No. 100," said Athletic Director Rusty Hollingsworth. "Amy was always exciting to watch as a player and her teams play with that same enthusiasm. She has developed into a fine coach. Again Congrats to Amy on this milestone win."

Amy Zink was also coached by her assistant on staff, Billy Gregory, during her playing days. He has watched her grow over the years and become an All-MSC player and now coach. Zink was awarded MSC Coach of the Year in 2010 during her initial season leading the Lady Tigers team.

"It's a testament to her loyalty and commitment to the CU program," said Gregory. "It isn't a coincidence that the program has taken major steps toward success since she came on campus in 2003. The competitive nature that drove her to be a record setting All-American still motivates her today to be the best coach she can be."

Zink and the Lady Tigers are taking an eight-game winning streak into the Highway 55 rivalry match up against 8th ranked Lindsey Wilson College on Tuesday, Oct. 1. JV game is set for 5 p.m. and varsity is set for 7:00 in Powell Athletic Center on the campus of Campbellsville University. The Lady Tiger seniors are asking for a blackout from the CU students. Come early to make sure you get a seat.
