CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Lady Tiger bowling overcame an early low score to battle back and finish sixth overall and fifth among varsity teams Sunday at their season-opening home tournament, the fifth annual Green River Classic.
"The girls did very well today. We had a few slumps here and there, but all-in-all fifth place in this group is tremendous going up against Louisville, Pikeville and this new team Emmanuel. Where we fell down was just some common mistakes, but we stayed together as a team. I'm pleased to start the season," said CU head coach John Rausch.
CU bowled a 768 team score in the first round Saturday morning to start the two-day tournament ranked 13th among 15 varsity and JV teams. The Lady Tigers bounced back to average 863 team points per round over the next four team games to move into fifth among varsity teams.
Kaylee Kaminski helped lead the rally, bowling 213 in the second game and 215 in the fifth on Saturday to place 14th individually among 104 bowlers. Her five-game average was 182.4 .Chelsey Stephens was 17th with an average of 178.2 and max score of 200 in the third game.
Before the tournament began Saturday, Rausch and Phillips Lanes recognized all seniors, including Lady Tigers Brandee Rae Lassiter, Marissa Rehmet and Candace Thomas.
The University of Pikeville won the tournament, led by Katlyn Simpson, who maxed out at 244 in her fourth game Friday en route to a five-pin individual victory over Bellarmine's Megan Szczepanski. Emmanuel College (Ga.) was second among varsity teams, followed by University of the Cumberlands and Bethel University.
The tournament also counts as a regular season Mid-South Conference event, placing Campbellsville fourth in the early season standings.
Campbellsville bowling will return to action Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 19-20 in the Orange and Black Classic, sponsored by UPike at Beaver-Vu Lanes in Dayton, Ohio.
