Newton's final round 71 only bright spot for CU in Fall MSC Tourney

BARDSTOWN, Ky. — It was a tale of two days for CU men's golf. Campbellsville improved 37 strokes on day two of the Mid-South Conference fall tournament and finished in seventh place.



 

The Tigers shot a team score of 302, tied for second lowest score of the day, and jumped two places on the MSC team leaderboard.

 

Senior Michael Newton fired a one-under, 71 to lead Campbellsville. Newton from Bowling Green, Ky. finished in a tie for second place and missed a playoff by three strokes to Lindsey Wilson's Oliver Cowl and University of the Cumberlands' Martin Jacobsson.

 

Cowl placed first with a 147 (72-75) to lead the Blue Raiders to a overall team championship as well.

 

Jacobsson finished tied with Newton with a consistent 150 (75-75) in the two rounds. University of the Cumberlands narrowly missed a team playoff and lost by one stroke to LWC.

 

James Higgins, Tanner Hall and Mathew Razor all shot final round 77's to help lead CU. Andrew Janson improved five strokes from yesterday and shot an 84 to round out the Tigers' top five.

 

Matthew Chewning played as an individual in the tournament and finished tied for 69th with a total score of 182 (91-91).
 

Emmanuel College (Ga.) finished in third place with a team score of 618 (305-313). St. Catharine College finished fourth at its home tournament with a score of 633 (315-318).

 

Georgetown College finished fifth, 639; Campbellsville, seventh, 641; Cumberland University, eighth, 643 and Shawnee State, ninth, 646.

 

The MSC Fall tournament concludes the fall schedule for CU men's golf. The Tigers will start the 2015 portion of their schedule in late February.
