PORTSMOUTH, Ohio. — In a season where the margin of error has been razor thin, the Lady Tigers let another close volleyball match slip through their fingers, losing to Shawnee State, 23-25, 26-28, 26-24 and 19-25.
A win would have put CU (7-22, 3-7 MSC) in a tie with Cumberlands for fifth place in the eight-team MSC standings. Instead it now trails Cumberlands by one game.
Â
The teams were even in kills (57) and attack errors (22 CU, 20 SSU), but 12 more service errors by CU played a significant role in the outcome.
Â
Campbellsville was able to rally from a 21-17 deficit to tie set one 23-all on an attack error by Tiffany Jackson. But a service error by Krista Mihelsone and an attack error by Rachel DeCoursey sealed the Lady Tigers' fate.
Â
Things looked promising in set two when a Jade Nelson kill sent CU to an 18-11 lead. However, errors mounted the rest of the way with SSU (12-13, 5-4 MSC) drawing even at 23-23 and 26-26. The Lady Tigers suffered another attack error at 26-27 and Paige Zelich's kill sealed the set win for Shawnee.
Â
With the score tied 24-all in the third, DeCoursey registered a kill and Jackson's error gave the set to the Lady Tigers.
Â
Campbellsville had another lead, 15-12 in the fourth, but Shawnee tied it at 15 on a Nelson attack error and the Bears went on to score 10 of the next 14 points.
Â
Jana Kortas had a match-high 16 kills to go along with 13 digs. Nelson and Aleksandra Popovic had double-figure kills with 10 and DeCoursey added nine. Jackie Schwieger had 49 of the team's 53 assists. Schwieger also had 14 digs to go along with 13 by Hannah Best, 12 by Abagael Murphy and 10 by DeCoursey.
Â
Shawnee had three players with double-figure kills, Jackson and Zelich with 13 and Kristi Humble with 11. Madison Smith was credited with 42 digs for SSU.
Â
Campbellsville stays on the road for a non-conference match with Indiana University Southeast on Monday, Oct. 20.
