CU downs Pikeville in straight sets on Dig Pink Night

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Lady Tiger volleyball collected three straight sets Wednesday night (25-12, 25-16, 25-17) to sweep University of Pikeville on the season. The win was part of Campbellsville's fifth-annual Dig Pink night.

Jana Kortas and Brianna Harman led Campbellsville's offense with 12 and 11 kills, respectively, while Jackie Schwieger had eight kills, mostly tips, on 12 attacks, a .667 attack percentage.

CU took a 10-3 lead to start the first set, but Pikeville quickly cut the difference within two points, 10-8. Campbellsville slowly created distance before ending the set on a 6-0 run with Schwieger serving.

Pikeville hung around through the first half of the second set, trailing 12-11, but Jade Nelson, Kortas and Aleksandra Popovic had back-to-back-to-back kills to start a 9-1 run and take a 21-12 lead. Harmon later collected a kill to force set point, and the set went to CU, 25-16, on a UPike attack error.

Following an extended break between the second and third sets, Campbellsville scored five straight points off the service of Marcella Compeau to take an 8-3 lead. UPike managed to stay close within three to five points until Brooklyn Bowling had back-to-back aces as part of a 5-0 run to give Campbellsville a nine-point lead, 21-12.

Campbellsville had 11 aces in the match, including four by Bowling and three by Harman.

Compeau led the defense with 13 digs, followed by 11 from Rachel DeCoursey and 10 from Harmon, who finished with her first collegiate double-double. Schweiger had 32 assists.

Campbellsville (6-25, 4-7 MSC) will travel to St. Catharine College for a MSC match Oct. 28 and then will travel to No. 10 Lindsey Wilson College on Oct. 30. Campbellsville's record was adjusted by three games earlier Wednesday to reflect forfeits from Aug. 26 and Sept. 6 due to an eligibility issue.
