CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville University delivered a 26-24 first-set blow to No. 11 Lindsey Wilson College Saturday, but the Lady Tigers fell short of the upset, dropping the next three sets, 25-21, 25-10 and 25-21.
Jana Kortas led Campbellsville with 11 kills, 11 digs three solo blocks and one assisted block, while Rachel DeCoursey had nine kills and Aleksandra Popovic had eight.
Campbellsville took a 4-1 lead to start the afternoon and led almost the entire first set. Trailing 10-5, LWC used a 10-5 run to take its first lead of the day, 15-14, but DeCoursey evened the score with a kill. The two rivals continued to trade points until Campbellsville closed the match with three straight points on a kill by Kortas, attack error and set-point tip by Jackie Schiweger for the 26-24 win.
CU's momentum continued into the second set, but the Blue Raiders pulled away from a 7-7 tie to take a 12-8 lead. Campbellsville pulled within two points, 23-21, after a couple of attack errors and another Kortas kill, but Yennifer Ramirez and Makenzie Montano closed the set with kills in the 25-21 win.
A few early errors by CU seemed to throw off the Lady Tigers' rhythm, as Lindsey Wilson ran away with the third set, 25-10. Ramirez and Nadelina Nesheva each had five kills in the set to lead LWC and finished the match with 19 and 14, respectively. Sarah Shilling followed their lead with 10 killsl in the match.
The fourth set was also controlled by the Blue Raiders, but Campbellsville hung in tight, pulling within two points late, 21-19 after a kill by DeCoursey, however Nesheva and Ramirez combined for three kills in LWC's last four points.
Schwieger led CU with 29 assists, while Montano had 37 for LWC. Blue Raiders' Libero Caitlyn Tino led all players with 23 digs, while her counterpart Marcella Compeau led CU with 13 digs.
Campbellsville (7-16, 3-5 MSC) will continue its home stretch Tuesday, Oct. 7 by hosting No. 14 Georgetown College at 7 p.m. EDT.Â
