Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Lady Tiger Basketball witnessed a tale of two halves tonight against University of the Cumberlands. Campbellsville struggled to get anything going in the first half, but came out roaring and ran past the Patriots, finishing UC off 70-49.
BOX SCORE
Campbellsville improves to 7-0 overall and 2-0 inside the Mid-South Conference. Cumberlands drops to 3-2 overall and 1-2 inside the MSC.
The final didn't show much of a game but it was a lot closer than the 70-49 score. Cumberlands kept up with the fifth ranked Lady Tigers for much of the game, but CU started to pull away with eight minutes remaining.
Lexxus Graham sparked Campbellsville and Madison Clements followed her lead. Graham knocked down CU's first triple with 10:56 left in regulation. But Clements stole the show scoring 15 of her career-high 19 points in the second half.
"That was a huge three for Lexxus to get us going," said CU head coach Ginger Colvin. "It's a big 3-pointer for a freshman to make but Madison Clements really got hot and showed her shooting abilities. She got tired late but she is such a gamer. It is hard to take a player out of the game who is in that zone. She got out energy going and we started to make shots."
Clements hit the Lady Tigers' second 3 after the Graham triple to put CU up 41-38 and then extended the LCampbellsville lead on the next possession by picking off a pass from UC's Lydia Box and going coast-to-coast for a layup while being fouled. Clements hit the freebie pushing CU out to a 44-38 lead.
The 11-0 run was capped by a LeeAnn Grider steal and layup with 9:45 remaining.
Clements would hit two more 3s and Caroline Owen finally got into the scoring column with 4:30 left to push CU up by 12 points. Owen leads Campbellsville averaging 13 points a game but scored five points tonight. Her lone 3-pointer late kept her streak alive, as the only Lady Tiger making a triple in every game this season.
Campbellsville held Cumberlands to 21 second-half points. The Patriots couldn't get into the flow of their offense in the second half due to foul trouble that started just 90 seconds into the game.
The first half saw six players for Cumberlands pick up with at least two fouls. Danijela Sviric picked up four fouls and Essence Grey had three — both had to sit substantial minutes in the first half.
Lydia Cuff, standing at 6-foot-2, came in averaging six rebounds a game to lead UC and third in scoring with 10 points, sat on the bench from the 18:33 mark because of two fouls.
The Lady Tigers started to get their offense going but it came from its defensive pressure. CU struggled in the first 15 minutes from the offensive side, shooting 25 percent (5-for-25). But Clements kick-started Campbellsville and picked up a deflection leading to a LeeAnn Grider coast-to-coast layup.
CU forced 20 Cumberlands turnovers but also turned the ball over 20 times, only eight came in the second half.
Kristen Jacob surpassed her career high with 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Chelsea Craig started for the injured Lindsey Burd and picked up a career-high 11 rebounds, 10 on the offensive boards. Burd did not start but played 19 minutes, scoring four points.
"Kristen Jacob also played a heck of a game," said Colvin. "Her defense was a difference but she scored in the paint when we needed it in the first half and kept us in the game. Chelsea is a beast in the paint and it was good to get her back after the adversity she has gone through earlier this season."
Campbellsville will now take its undefeated record to the court on Saturday, Nov. 22 against University of Pikeville. The Lady Tigers have won 17-straight over the Bears and tip at 1 p.m. ET in Powell Athletic Center.
