Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE. Ky. — Campbellsville had to shake off a pesky Asbury University tonight by using a late run in the first half and another after intermission, defeating the Eagles 88-60 in the Powell Athletic Center.
"We were a little lethargic on defense to start out and when we're like that we don't get some of our normal offensive opportunities," said coach Ginger Colvin. "But give their coach and team credit. He has done a great job with that group of girls. They play together, shoot it nice and, I think, they'll win a lot of games this year."
CU (3-0, 0-0 MSC) trailed by eight points twice in the first half, dropping behind 15-7 and then again at 17-9 before Lindsey Burd and Madison Clements dropped through a couple of buckets with 12:20 remaining until intermission. Burd led the Lady Tigers in the first half with eight points, but had to sit out nine minutes because of foul trouble.
Several career highs were registered by Lady Tigers. Lindey Young had 20 points, and Madison Clements had 12 rebounds for their marks. LeeAnn Grider tied her career high with 10 assists. CU had 25 assists on 36 made baskets and out-rebounded Asbury 53-36, 14 of those off the offensive boards.
Burd and Daizah Kimberland joined Young in double figures with 16 and 15 points, respectively.
"Daizah has had three really good games for us," said Colvin. "She brings so much energy and it can be contagious."
Asbury (1-1, 0-0 KIAC) was led by Savannah Taylor's 13 points and was joined in double figures by Brittany Warren and Catie Fletcher with 10 each. Taylor had nine boards.
Campbellsville shot poorly in the first half (38 percent) but returned after intermission and blistered the nets at 65 percent.
"We got it inside in the second half," said Colvin. "It was great to see Lindey (Young) hit some baskets. She worked so hard all summer."
Campbellsville was playing without the services of starting senior forward Chelsea Craig, whose mother died unexpectedly last night. Her father, who was involved in a vehicle accident 10 days ago, died from complications during surgery. His funeral was last Thursday.
"We have a lot of heavy hearts right now," said Colvin. "Everybody on this team feels so bad for her.
"Just to have come out and played was an accomplishment for us tonight. We definitely feel a void without her here."
The Lady Tigers remain at home in the Powell Athletic Center for a game Saturday, Nov. 8 with Miami-Middletown. Tipoff at 3:00. The game will be broadcast in progress over university radio (WLCU 88.7). A link for listening on the computer can be found at www.campbellsvilletigers.com.
