LEBANON, Tenn. — Campbellsville used a workmanlike performance tonight at Cumberland University and defeated the Bulldogs in three sets, 25-16, 25-15 and 25-18 — ending the regular season on a three-match win streak.
The win unofficially gives the Lady Tigers (9-27, 5-9 MSC) the No. 6 seed in the Mid-South Conference Tournament opposite the likely No. 3 seed St. Catharine Patriots. That tournament will be hosted by Campbellsville on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 14-15.
Â
Aleksandra Popovic tied her season high with 11 kills to lead the team in her final regular season match. It was Popovic and Jade Nelson who led CU to a 25-16 first-set win, both collecting four kills and helping the Lady Tigers to a .500 hitting percentage.
Â
Things cooled off offensively for Campbellsville in sets two and three as the Lady Tigers ended the match hitting .136. A couple of aces by Jackie Schwieger in the middle of set two led CU on an 8-0 run that Cumberland could not overcome.
Â
Nelson's kill sealed the first set win.
Â
Breanna Harman came alive in the second set with two of her three kills that distanced CU from the Bulldogs at 11-7 and an plodding march to the finish.
Â
Nelson's kill gave the Lady Tigers a 14-8 lead in the third set and not for a couple of attack errors late, CU would have ended the match in under 70 minutes.
Â
Nelson had nine kills and Rachel DeCoursey (4) and Harman (3) and Kortas (3) sized up the offense for CU. Marcella Compeau had 10 digs and Jackie Schwieger 28 assists.
Â
Michelle Evans led Cumberland (12-19, 1-13 MSC) with nine kills.
