Tigers advance past Cumberlands, 3-2, into MSC Semifinals

Box Score

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville University men's soccer held off a late push by the University of the Cumberlands in a 3-2 win Friday night to advance to the Mid-South Conference semifinals.

The Tigers (13-6) will meet either Lindsey Wilson College or Georgetown College on Thursday, Nov. 13 at 3 p.m. at Finley Stadium.

Less than a week after Gustav Carlsson scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win at Cumberlands, the senior from Sweden netted the decisive goal once again. Carlsson scored in the 67th minute to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead off an Alex Ryan assist. That lead would be challenged late, when Eduardo Maia took a pass from Jack Cousin and struck it over a leaping defender and past the diving CU keeper, Josh Hollis, in the 76th minute.

Cumberlands pressured late but was unable to neutralize the game.

Campbellsville started the night with a goal in the third minute, the signature style for junior forward Marcelo Petit. However, Cousin quickly answered for Cumberlands one minute later to tie the game, 1-1. Alex Ryan regained the Tigers' lead in the 29th minute, bending a shot from 30 yards out into the top left corner of the net. Shane Buchanan assisted the goal.

Hollis faced only three shots on goal, collecting one save in the second half. Caio Presa had nine saves for Cumberlands

Campbellsville out-shot the Patriots, 19-5, and had 12 shots on goal, led by Petit and Carlsson with three each.

Cumberlands' season comes to close at 4-12, while Campbellsville will play on as the No. 4 seed into next week's MSC semifinals, hosted at CU's Finley Stadium and Citizens Bank Field.
