Box Score 2 DECATUR, Ala. — In sports you have to have a short memory, and Victoria Decker has mastered the art of memory loss.
Decker, the hard-luck loser in yesterday's game against No. 7 Auburn-Montgomery when she lost a three-hitter, pitched nine innings of two-hit ball today. Her LTS teammates snuck across the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth in a 2-1 win over William Woods.
"I couldn't be more proud of my team and the way we held together late in this game," said coach Shannon Wathen after the William Woods heroics. "The girls just kept battling, stayed focused and carried out our game plan."
The day began with a 5-1 win over Point University and both of today's wins allowed Campbellsville to exit Decatur with a 5-1 record in the Arctic Blast.
The wins punctuated another good week for the Lady Tigers as they move to 10-2 on the season.
Campbellsville 5, Point University 1
Campbellsville rattled out nine hits and scored all the runs it would need in the first inning, beating Point University 5-1.
CU also got seven good innings from pitchers Taylor Wroe (3) and Courtney Turpin (4) in holding Point to one run on six hits. Turpin fanned five batters and got out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of sixth by forcing Kyndal Deel to ground out to the pitcher's circle.
Heather Oakley went yard with Kristin Benton aboard in the first frame to seed CU's 2-0 lead. It was Oakley's first homerun of her senior season, as she was second in that category last season with nine long balls.
The Lady Tigers added another run in the third when Kristin Benton led off with her second home run of the season.
Leading 3-1, Campbellsville closed out its scoring in the fifth. Sara Paragon and Adrean Jordan singled with one out and after Alyssa Barker drew a walk, Erin Benton knocked in two runs with a single to left.
Paragon led CU with three hits, but Oakley and Erin Benton each had two RBIs. Kristin Benton had two hits and Jordan one.
Campbellsville 2, William Woods 1
Victoria Decker pitched out of based-loaded jams in the second and third innings and left nine Owls stranded in all. The sophomore right-hander allowed two hits, walked four and struck out six, while pitching all nine innings.
There was a lot of high-staked drama through the first seven innings, but nothing to show from it on the scoreboard. CU left seven runners stranded itself. Alyssa Barker was in scoring position in the third and Kennedy Shutter was stranded on third base in the seventh.
But in the eighth, Campbellsville was able to put Barker on second by virtue of the international tie-breaker rule. Kristin Benton sent a double to left-center and gave CU a 1-0 lead, but momentarily.
William Woods also scored in the seventh after Decker threw a wild pitch with Shelby LeCuru on third.
Erin Benton came up big in the top of the ninth. The junior from Flaherty, Ky. sent a single into center to score Oakley and then Decker put the Owls down in order in the bottom of the ninth.
CU had six hits in the game, two by Paragon and one each by Kristin Benton, Erin Benton, Jordan and Shelby Ray.
Campbellsville will open its home schedule with a double-header on Tuesday, Feb 25 with Union College. First pitch set for 2:00 at Veterans Memorial Park.
