LONDON, Ky. – Cassidy Scantland won her third tournament of her freshman campaign Tuesday, rallying back from a rough back nine to shoot a 78 and win the SEKI Invitational by three strokes at Crooked Creek Golf Community.
Scantland entered the day with a two-stroke lead over a trio pf players — University of the Cumberlands' Bri Tokariwski, and Lindsey Wilson's Courtney Swindle and Candace Stacy— after shooting a 78 in the first round Monday.
"It is just astounding. She has accomplished so much and hasn't scratched the surface of her potential," CU women's golf coach Brent Vernon said.
Tuesday's 78 wasn't pretty. Scantlad shot even par through the first eight holes, but a hiccup double bogey on nine and then went par, double, triple over the next three to loose what was a four-stroke lead. However, she bounced back to eagle the par four 13th hole, which she bogeyed in the first round. She found the hole from 112 yards out to quickly shift back into the lead.
"The eagle on the 13th hole really settled her down and got her back on track after she had lost a four-stroke lead. She could have easily thrown the towel in but kept battling and ended up winning the tournament with a strong field in her first tournament of the spring," Vernon said. "Hopefully she will continue to build on this tourney moving forward."
CU finished third as a team behind tournament winner and host University of the Cumberlands, which shot 643 as a team through 36 holes. Lindsey Wilson College shot 665 and Campbellsville shot 676.
Ashley Goodin was second for CU and 16th overall with an 85 and 87 (172) in the tournament, followed by Anna-Marie Hyatt's 173 (84-89), Olivia Parrott's 178 (85-93) and Grace Gupton shot 193 after bouncing back from her 103 Monday to shoot 90 on Tuesday.
Campbellsville will have a week off and will return to action March 31 and April 1 in the Lindsey Wilson College Blue Raider Classic and Mid-South Conference Spring Tournament in Jamestown, Ky.
