Box Score 2 PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — Five errors and four wild pitches usually isn't a recipe for winning, and it certainly wasn't for Lady Tiger Softball today, losing both ends of a doubleheader to Shawnee State by identical 4-2 scores.
The losses suddenly bring several teams into play for second place in the Mid-South Conference. Campbellsville (25-11, 12-6 MSC) is tied with Georgetown (12-6) and Rio is at 10-6. Shawnee State, Cumberland (Tenn.) and the University of the Cumberlands all have seven losses. Lindsey Wilson suddenly finds itself with a five-game lead in conference play.
Campbellsville, which moved up to 22nd in the recent NAIA Top 25 Poll, held a 2-0 lead after 5 1/2 innings before the bottom fell out.
Consecutive no-out singles by Kirsti Yates and Holly Brabson and an error put runners on second and third and chased starter Taylor Wroe. But her replacement, Martina Riney (1-3), gave up a single and three wild pitches, one on a strike out, and Shawnee would plate three runs.
After the dust had cleared, Riney gave way to Courtney Turpin and offered up an RBI-single to Hannah Ditto.
Shawnee's Allie Chapman (9-6) six-hit the Lady Tigers and did not walk anyone.
CU's runs came on back-to-back fourth inning home runs by Heather Oakley and Sara Paragon. Erin Benton had two hits and Markie Smith and Brittany Rippy each reached base safely once.
Campbellsville led 1-0 through 3 ½ innings of game two when Rippy scored on Kristin Benton's single.
Shawnee would tack on three runs in the bottom of the fourth when the Lady Bears used only one hit and a costly error. It ended up being all the run production Shawnee would need.
Shelby Ray scored in the sixth after leading off with a single.
Victoria Decker (10-6) absorbed the loss even though she only allowed three hits over her six innings of work. Miranda Pauley (8-2) was credited with the win, pitching a seven-hitter.
Kristin Benton and Paragon both had two-hit games, with Ray, Oakley and Rippy all picking up hits.
CU gets back into conference play Thursday, April 3 when it travels to Williamsburg, Ky. And a matchup with the University of the Cumberlands with a doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
