Lady Tigers sitting pretty in MSC Tournament

BARDSTOWN, Ky. — Campbellsville women's golf looked to continue its hot spring after winning two of its four tournaments. The Lady Tigers sit in second place (311) after the first round of the Mid-South Conference Spring Championship and are just seven strokes off the lead.

ROUND ONE RESULTS

"It was a really good day for our team," said CU Head Coach Brent Vernon. "I was pleased with our poise and composure. Even though we are seven strokes back, we are still within striking distance. We just need to work hard tomorrow and try to cut some strokes off of the lead and put ourselves in a position to compete. If we do that we will be there at the end and Wednesday will be a fun round."

University of the Cumberlands (304) leads the way in the seven-team tournament. The Patriots won the 2014 MSC Regular Season Championship and already punched their ticket to the NAIA National Championships in Lincoln, Neb. UC also has won the tournament championship the previous two years.

But Campbellsville's all-freshman team is looking to take down the defending MSC champions and sit within striking distance after the first round.

Cassidy Scantland leads the way for the Lady Tigers and sits in second place in the individual side after posting a one-over, 73.

Scantland started on hole No. 10 and got ahead quickly with a birdie. But the freshman from Greensburg, Ky. took a step back after dropping four-straight shots on holes 13-16. Scantland, who has won four tournaments in her first season as a Lady Tiger recovered and picked up birdies on the par five, 18th and 3rd holes and also on the par four seventh hole.

Anna Marie Hyatt is sitting pretty after finishing with a four-over, 76. The freshman from Lawrenceburg, Ky. is chasing former high school teammate Taylor Gillis (Anderson Co. High School) after she posted an even, 72, to lead the way.

Hyatt only picked up shots on the fifth and 18th holes but the eagle on the 18th was the lone eagle throughout the whole 37-women field.

The top five golfers after the first round were all from University of the Cumberlands (3) and Campbellsville University (2).

"Cassidy Scantland and Anna Marie Hyatt both set the tone and really were solid all day," said Vernon. "Anna-Marie's eagle on the 18th was fantastic. She hit two great shots onto the green and sank about a 15-foot putt downhill."

Ashley Goodin sits inside the top 10 after finishing with a seven-over, 79, which is good for a tie in 10th place.

"I can't say enough about the mental toughness of Ashley Goodin today," said Vernon. "Even though it was our third best score it was very impressive in many ways. After two holes she was plus five and fought back to shoot plus two throughout the rest of her round. She never got down on herself and stayed strong to her game plan."

Olivia Parrott finished with an 11-over, 83 but was unable to record any birdies in her first round. Grace Gupton rounded out CU with an 18-over, 90 and recorded one birdie on the par three, fifth hole.

"With this being a three-day even, that means we have to be mentally ready and get past a bad hole or two and just keep fighting," said Vernon. "We did that today and I'm very interested to see how this young team responds to a great round of golf. Hopefully we can put ourselves into position and compete on Wednesday with another great day tomorrow."

Lindsey Wilson College (317), University of Pikeville (321), Georgetown College (336), Cumberland University (346), and St. Catharine College (399) round out the first round.

Round two of the seven-team tournament will start at approximately 8:30 a.m. at the Bardstown Country Club at Maywood.
