Scantland leads MSC tournament after round two

BARDSTOWN, Ky. — Cassidy Scantland stayed even-keel after two rounds of her first Mid-South Conference Championship Tournament. The freshman from Greensburg, Ky. shot a two-over, 75 and leads the women's field by four strokes.

Scantland (+4) struggled out of the gate with an opening six on the par-five 10th hole. But she picked up a shot with a birdie going into the turn on the par-five 18th.  After picking up two more bogeys on the front-nine, she finished with 13 pars, four bogeys and one birdie.

If Scantland wins the conference championship, she will be the second Lady Tiger to win the individual tournament and qualify for the NAIA National Tournament.

Lauren Scholl finished tied for first in 2006 and won the opening playoff hole to be the first Lady Tiger to win the conference championship and qualify for the NAIA National Tournament.

Scholl was also named MSC Player of the Year, which was the second time any Lady Tiger has been awarded that honor. The first came form former head coach Lindsey Newton in 2005.

Her counterpart after yesterdays first round, Taylor Gillis from University of the Cumberlands, was playing just as well as Scantland but the final four holes got to the senior. Gillis finished with two bogeys, a double bogey and a triple bogey, dropping her seven shots off the lead and is now in fifth place.

Kaitlin Allan from Lindsey Wilson College tied Scantland's 75 in round two for the lowest score of the day. Allan currently sits in second place and four strokes off the lead (+8).

"Cassidy (Scantland) has played well and is in great shape after her first two rounds," said CU Head Coach Brent Vernon. "If she does the exact same thing she has been doing the previous three tournaments now she will be fine. She is also competing for Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year honors, so there is a lot riding on this final round for her."

Campbellsville (637) as a team took a step back in round two. The freshman-laden class has grown up over the previous two months, winning two-of-four tournaments but fell from second to third in the overall standings. CU is only two shots behind Lindsey Wilson (635) for second place.

Three Lady Tiger Tigers finished round one being over par by single digits but only one completed that task today (Scantland).

Olivia Parrott stayed just as consistent in round two as she did round one. Her 11-over, 83, was the exact score from yesterday and she now sits in a tie for 20th place.

Ashley Goodin also dropped five strokes from yesterdays round, sitting her in a tie for 14th place with a 12-over par, 84.

Anna Marie Hyatt dropped the most shots in round two. After staying within striking distance with a 76 in round one, Hyatt finished with a 12-over par (84) round two performance, dropping her from fifth to ninth.

Grace Gupton rounded out CU in the field with a 15-over, 87. Gupton shaved three shots off her round one score and currently sits in a tie for 27th place.

"Not a bad second day," said Vernon. "We fell back in the standings from the leader Cumberlands and let Lindsey Wilson College catch us but we have another day to play better. We have to shoot low to have any chance but in golf anything can happen. I just want the girls to relax and go play a solid round of golf and let the scores fall where they may."

University of the Cumberlands (623) still leads the tournament after round two. But Lindsey Wilson College (635) picked up a stroke on the Blue Raiders in round two and sits in second.

Rest of the team scores are as followed:

4th – University of Pikeville (645)

5th – Georgetown College (675)

6th – Cumberland University (679)

7th – St. Catharine College (803)

Round three of the seven-team tournament will start with a shotgun start at approximately 8:30 a.m. at the Bardstown Country Club at Maywood.
