ATHENS, Ala. –Rain may have washed out the first practice round of The Masters' on Monday, but it didn't stop Campbellsville University women's golf, which sits in first place at the RedHawk Spring Invitational, hosted by Martin Methodist College.
Severe storms created flooding and marshy conditions across Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia Sunday night and Monday, and forced a delay in the start of the tournament at the Canebrake Golf Club.
CU started its day late, teeing off at 1:30 p.m. CDT, and managed to play most of its first round before darkness fell. The Lady Tigers resumed the opening round early Tuesday morning and lead all teams with a score of 332.
"Overall, it was a really good first round. I still want us to do a better job of finishing our round," said Brent Vernon, CU women's golf coach. "We gave up so many shots to end our round, but we battled and fought hard and have a decent lead going into the second round. Hopefully we will come out today ready to go and finish this tournament with a win. It would be a great tournament win for our team today."
Freshman Cassidy Scantland is tied for first with a 75 after shooting 38 on the front nine. She will look to win her fourth tournament of the season as the second round plays out Tuesday. Anna Marie Hyatt follows Scantalnd's lead with a first round score of 80, shooting 40 on both the front and back. Olivia Parrott (88), Grace Gupton (89) and Ashley Goodin (95) round out CU's scores.
