Scantland drops back, still in contention after round two

LINCOLN, Neb. – It was a day of two different rounds for Lady Tiger Cassidy Scantland in the NAIA Women's Golf National Championship. The freshman from Greensburg, Ky., struggled with consistency Wednesday at Wilderness Ridge Golf Club and finished with a seven-over, 79, dropping her to a tie for 10th place.

Though tied for 10th, Scantland leads all individual golfers and is only six strokes behind tournament leader Daniella Martinez of Northwood (Texas). University of the Cumberlands' Candice Lindique is also tied for 10th after shooting 73 and 79 in her first two rounds.

Scantland dropped consecutive shots coming out of the gate. The two bogeys and one par in the first three holes matched yesterday's first three holes, but Scantland was unable to pick up the big shot when she needed it.

After picking up pars on holes four and five, Scantland looked to find her groove on the par five, sixth hole. After hitting her approach into the thick rough left off the green, Scantland used a beautiful touch to land the ball softly on the green. It gave her a reasonable par putt, which she made.

But the big numbers started to pile up after the three consecutive pars. Scantland bogeyed seven, double bogeyed eight and bogeyed nine to complete her first nine holes at six-over.

Trouble came off the tee for the 19-year old making her first NAIA Tournament appearance. Scantland only hit three greens in regulation until finding the middle of the fairway on the final three holes.

On the back nine, the birdie opportunities started to come in a hurry but Scantland missed both putts by less that four inches combined.

After picking up pars on No. 10 and 11, the par-three 13th hole is what did her in.

Scantland hit the green off the tee and left herself a lengthy birdie opportunity. But her lag putting struggled to find any consistency, and she ended up three-putting to drop to eight-over par for the tournament.

In the final five holes, though, the swing started to come back and the confidence got higher and higher.

Scantland picked up her first birdie of the second round on the final hole, after reaching the par five, 18th hole in two. Her eagle putt fell just short and left of the hole and she tapped in for birdie.

Top-ranked Savannah College of Art & Design (Ga.) leads the team standings by three strokes, shooting 304 in the first two rounds. Oklahoma City, the defending NAIA champ, entered the day with a two-stroke lead (302), but shot 309 as a team to drop to second after 36 holes. Cumberlands (Ky.) (618, 310-308), William Woods (Mo.) (624, 307-317) and Coastal Georgia (625, 308-317) round out the top five after two rounds of play.

The top 17 teams and 40 individuals will make the cut after Thursday's third round.

Round three will start again bright and early, as Scantland will tee off at 8:50 a.m. CT after a weather delay Thursday morning. You can follow all of the action on Twitter - @CvilleTigers for in-round updates.
